Hello folks,

I'm keen to know the forum's views on using GPT or any other AI as an editing tool for writing TBHP posts.

I largely use Notion for writing and as far as I know, Notion uses GPT to generate content.

My views

Pros:

1. Writing up elaborate details can take time and it can be a hindrance for people (like me) who are bad writers
2. Better grammer faster
3. Better reading if the editor has done a good job

Cos:

1. GPT can generate pretty flowery prose and it can be a buzzkill
2. Incorrect details because of model hallucination. If the author isn't careful and in a rush, the post will beat the purpose
3. Risk of IP infringement

Note to Mods: I couldn't find a relevant post where this has been answered (have tried the thread search) or a relevant thread for this discussion. If I've missed any please merge it and please accept my apologies.

Gen AI is creeping into every aspect of writing. Be it emails, text messages or WhatsApp messages. I'm not sure how much longer we would be able to distinguish truly original content (grouping of words) from AI-edited content.

The whole essence of TBHP is based on originality so I don’t think this is gonna happen here.

Not sure if you can or are allowed to answer this but does TBHP use some software for detecting it? Our final year project was thoroughly tested via a software called Turnitin and it sure caught many for using ChatGPT and other AI tools.

Yes, there are many software available that analyzes & lets you know if a particular piece of content is written by human or generative AI.

If you notice a post (especially by a new member) that seems suspicious (like it has been generated by ChatGPT), please do report the post.

I can understand the risk of unchecked proliferation of generated content. It would kill the forum.

On a slightly different note from the programming world, there was some amount of furor on using Github co-pilot and the need to preserve engineering skills. Reminded me of the Vim vs IDE (Integrated Development Environment) debates from the last century. After debating for more than 2 decades we know the outcome. IDEs didn't make average programmers better at the craft. The basics of software engineering, logic and the hunger to learn made engineers better irrespective of the choice of the tool. IDEs made smart programmers more productive at something they were already good at. After using Co-pilot for more than a year I feel the outcome will be the same this time around as well.

Outside Team-BHP, where it is banned outright, the general accepted norm is to acknowledge that the post is generated using ChatGPT, or any other AI based response system. Else it will be seen as plagiarism and the post is deleted and the one who posted is subject to a warning and subsequent ban for repeated offense. Even copy/paste of a subset of the AI generated post is considered to be plagiarism, if it is not acknowledged.
