Agree, if you see under a microscope you'll find even more entities! Let's put it this way: in UPI, there is no entity (like Visa or Master) make money from MDR charged to either merchant or the payer and the money directly goes from payer's account to the payee's in a single transaction.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

99% of the time I used credit card wherever feasible. This way, I don't show my account details to others on the street.

When the vendor does not have credit card facility, I prefer to use Samsung Pay. Its gesture enabled and has my credit cards and UPI IDs linked. I can use samsung pay to pay from my multiple bank accounts and credit cards in case I forget mine at home.

I wish the India version of the Samsung Watch had Samsung pay enabled, I would just pay with my watch everywhere, whether UPI or credit card. Unfortunately it isn't available.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

Have been using BHIM as my primary UPI payment solution, works most of the time. Other than that use Bank based UPI solutions. Mostly Kotak, I like the interface and its ability to search and pay using just phone numbers even for non-Kotak UPI Ids. Haven't seen that in others apps.

Use UPI mostly for small transactions. Still use my credit cards for all big ones.

NPCI is that entity, and they would like to charge for it. But right now GoI is not allowing them to do so (0% MDR for UPI & Rupay debit cards is the mandate). Sooner or later it will come - or other methods of monetising transactions. After all the developers at PhonePe and Google Pay need to get paid, the printer who prints the QR codes need to get paid, the BDEs who enrol merchants and put up the QR/voice thingies need to get paid...

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

Samsung Pay since I get points and can get vouchers of some Pizza outlets via the points. Easy to use interface and works very well.

Will probably shift to PhonePe or PayTM as I plan to change my phone to one of those 20mins fast charging ones.

I specifically did not register on GPay as I did not want Google to have further data on me than they already do (which is already in tonnes). Financial standing and exact spending data is the king of all data. Especially now that they removed "don't be evil" from their code of conduct.

Cred now looks like a shady online spammy casino with bombarding immaturely colored graphics to lure teenagers. Their UI is so bad now that it hurts to look at it. So, I never use CredPay. I have reduced my usage for credit card payments on it too and shifted to PayTM.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

Voted for PhonePe!

I used to use Google Pay a lot initially, but it proved to be very unreliable. There were instances when I would want to make a quick purchase and Google Pay would just fail to make the payment citing server connectivity/down issues.

When these instances grew more and more, I switched to PhonePe. Purely from a reliability standpoint. And reliable it has proven to be. Never bothered going back to Google Pay.

I use Samsung Pay for UPI (and also some Tap-n-Pay Cards as well). Interface is nice and works seamlessly. Plus gets me reward points for Myntra / Food vouchers etc.

Visa and Master are for-profit corporates. NPCI is non-profit, part of payment infrastructure of the country. Whether NPCI will charge in future or not is a different question. Even assuming they charge to recover costs, it will be way below the for-profit players.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I use Google pay but I'm moving towards cash. I have privacy issues as every UPI payment requires location. It's very easy for anyone with access to this data to map my movements and draw patterns.

If there are only a few people using a system, there's less risk of data theft as it's not worth the effort for the hacker. That's why Mac remained fairly virus-free for a long time but hackers are starting to find new vulnerabilities in Mac too. Hence, the frequent security patches.

After a very long time, I started carrying my wallet again some 3 months ago. Otherwise, I'm on the QR code-based payment platforms since early 2016 and enjoyed fat cashbacks as an early adopter.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

Voted Paytm
It was my first UPI app and I continue to use it. Has never failed me in all these years. Best part is, it’s not linked to any of my bank accounts. I just add money to the wallet and use it. Hope this saves me from any UPI fraud. Not sure if other UPI provide similar wallet facility.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I use Google Pay for the most part, but sometimes when it fails due to mobile internet data issues, I switch to the banking app's UPI.

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

Samsung Pay - This is my preferred UPI app.

Few reasons

- Very handy - Swipe up from home screen & pay. That's it.
- Simple & Intuitive UI (this is a big plus - well designed)
- No unnecessary permissions needed - location etc like gpay
- Credit cards digitised for tap & pay (NFC)
- Fasttag recharge on the go
- Vaccine certificates (for all the security checks)
- Reward points for gift cards - No scratching disappointments
- Almost zero failure rate

Re: Poll : Your preferred UPI app and why?

I use Gpay for small value purchases (invariably at stores where the only other option is cash), credit cards for everything else. A practical difficulty observed is that there could be someone peering over my shoulder as I type the UPI PIN at a crowded counter, perhaps wallet is the only way to do away with the PIN for low value transactions.

That said, I find OTP in online credit card transactions a pain as I have mobile signal issues at work as well as my apartment (time to change that provider!) and find myself using UPI yet again for quite many online spends.

BHIM for it's rather clunky UI is probably the only UPI app which allows direct transfer to an account number + IFSC code (without registering them as a payee)

A Paytm Wallet + UPI combo that I have been using for last couple of years fits this use case perfectly.
