Me, I'm in my prime.
I believe the Oxford has the apt word for it. Studmuffin. |
:Shockked::confused: Shantam papam, shantam papam! Sam-bhai, hamaari kya mazaal! (Sorry, some expressions are better in vernacular, and the last one is rather un-translatable)
Touchy, are we? The target was the venerable geriatric @anupmathur, who was having naughty thoughts.
:) Der Alte, I know. I said YOU because of your monicker.
As RD once said Monicker, oh my darling!
I could not decide whether to put this in the Jokes thread or here.
Anyway, so i was checking the terms and conditions for the Free Tickets for Platinum card holders at PVR when i came across this:
The numbers of free tickets available daily under the VISA PVR offer are limited and customers can avail of this offer on a
first-cum-first serve basis for each day

Getting our latin mixed with english, are we?
In latin, "cum" means "with", as in "with honors".
summa cum laude = with greatest honor.
But when used in English, what do you think it means???

I did answer that one, but it was deleted. :Shockked:
And it a very clean answer too, I swear!
However, I am very curious about your lil' 'signature' sentence:

If I were to guess, I'd pick the first part as being sufficient and correct (as usage of language, though not necessarily the conveyed message).
What am I missing?
If you bear in mind that "cum" is a legitimate Latin word that means "with", it's immediately obvious why it's wrong to say "first-cum-first-served". Interestingly, the word used to be correctly used in India long ago to refer to a (then) popular article of furniture: the sofa-cum-bed. With the proliferation of "SMS lingo", one commonly sees words such as "dun" for "don't", so "cum" for "come" might well seem okay to a lot of people.

Well, i guess they went for containment and deleted both our messages.
Anyway, regarding my signature, the second part is there in order to do justice to a song by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Its more "lyrically correct" than grammatically correct.

And before this also gets deleted, better to clarify that here prick refers to the some sort of a wooden prod used for cattle in the olden days!

Like I read somewhere: if you're not living on the edge you're using up too much space!
I'm trying to live on a little dot on the edge, and have my carbon footprint fit within that dot! :)
I don't know if this is the correct section to post this but I have a TOEFL iBT exam on 16 FEB and would be highly indebted if someone could post some pointers about the prepartion for the same.

Prima facie you should be at par. However, do be careful and avoid spelling mistakes like you have in your text above - 'preparation'!
Short and sweet sentences with adequate punctuation. :)
Correct punctuation would be even better ;)
