10-12 Brand new Rover Montego 2.0 DLX for sale. Price 3.95 lakhs. Make : 1994

Hi guys,

Popular Cars has around 10-12 brand new Montego DLX 2.0 Turbo for sale. Asking price is 3.95 lakhs. Cars are brand new ones and not registered. Year of make : 1994. All cars were pretty dusty. Some were even dented. One had a broken tail light. Interiors were still intact and had that new look to it. Guess Popular got the entire stock of the unsold Montego's now at a throwaway price from the factory.

The cars are at the Popular Cars ground in Andheri East just after the Chakala junction signal.

Boy, this brings back memories - Thanks V12!!!

I remember seeing the Montego at the Fortpoint showroom in 1994, for a price of 11 lacs on the road. Even though they were got in by the fraudulent Sipani Motors...there was nothing "Montana" about these machines. Undoubtedly the best car offered in India at that time. It was a diesel but lightning fast..If I remember correctly, the turbo diesel managed a 0 - 100 in 12 seconds. And yes, they were fully loaded. Some even had a sun roof.

3.95 lacs is really tempting buttttttttttttttttt these cars have been sitting in one place for 11 years. I'd rather have a 1994 car with 100,000 kms on it than one thats been not used. Cars are made to be driven, not parked in one place for a decade.

Great picture again...Simply amazing find.

3.95 is definitely a steal for a Montego. All these i guess were top-of-the-line models. Corrcet me if i'm wrong but i guess the 2.0 D was sold in only one trim. They also had sun-roofs. The Montego was, but again the timing was wrong and therefore proved to be a disaster.

Great find V12 .. Where are these cars parked. Quite a no. of Montegos there that too brand new . I thought there were harldly any around. I see an odd one now and then with broken lights and stuff. Looks like getting spare parts is close to impossible

Tempting price but for that I'd rather buy a used Lancer or City

i agree with GTO,
it was one of the best cars at taht time and i think was available in only 2 colors--blue and maroon.
it had a saloon and an estate version and i think it was a 2000cc engine

Nope! the Montego was available in black, white and metallic green too. It had a 2 litre 81bhp turbodiesel engine. Though it was the best car in the country then, it came at a time when people were just not used to seeing price tags of Rs. 10 lac+. Not many people comfortable with the idea of having a diesel car as a personal vehicle. The best diesel we had here was the Contessa Isuzu 2.0 DLX which was just mediocre.

If the Cars are not registered then happy birthday to the person who buys it, coz if the factory which produces the car shuts shop or hasnt paid its taxes for the current year, then the vehicles are no longer registered.

V12:

I'd seen the cars a couple of years back.

They were asking for Rs. 5lacs per car (maybe Rs. 2.5lacs - i'm not too clear). When asked about the availability of spare parts, was told that spare parts could easily be scourged off the remaining cars.. LOL..
According to what i understand, only one of them was "whole", the others were falling apart and the "whole" one was being supplemented with parts from the other cars..

Gosh...are these cars still lying there or have they been shifted to some scrapyard. ..My friend had a white color saloon with sunroof till about 2 years ago, but spare parts were scarce to source and finally he had to sell it off and that too for 85000 INR...I still drool on the ultra smooth engine the car had, the power it delivered for a diesel..but YES it was pricey when he bought.

Can somebody find out if POpular Cars will sell just the engines off the 'unwhole' cars???

Those engines are bloody good....forget the car.
