Wow did comment in this about 10 years back but then missed it completely. Here is some of our catch here in Goa.

Fresh water crabs found just after first floods. Caught using chicken pieces as bait.



Mullets and Pearl spots caught using bread as bait. We have so many of these here.


Mudsuckers. Caught using dead prawns as bait.



Red Snappers. Live prawns as bait. Also we make sure to release back any snapper less than 250-300gms.

Couple of weeks back I had a fun early morning trip to Kasimedu with a close friend.

Had to wake up at 330 AM, ride out to Parrys corner to catch up with David by 430.

First stop was at a ice seller to stock up our ice box.

A halt at the Kasimedu fish market. Learnt a lot of new things on how the fish is brought from the sea to the coast. The early morning catch is from these boats that spend a couple of weeks in the sea. They catch and freeze everything. So while the fish you get is fresh... it's technically not.

But if you have a keen eye and know your fish, you can get very good deals. I picked over 2 kilos of tiger prawns at just about 1100.

From here it was a short ride to N8. The pier in the middle of the waters. Fishing is not the idyllic lazy sport as portrayed in movies. Our bait was prawns. Cut them up and stick them into the hooks. Then fling into the water and pray.

I caught 3 fishes, which I got back home and cooked.

Also 2 fishes which I returned to the water. Both were with venomous thorns and one of them called stone fish is straight out of a horror movie.

On our return we stopped at the Kasimedu to clean up the fishes and prawns.

The fresh catch was just coming in from the small boats and the noisy auctions were fun to watch.

The prawns and fish were both liberally coated in ginger garlic paste, chilly powder, turmeric and salt. Then pan fried.
This was a very nice learning experience and a fresh understanding of how our food supply chain works.

The Stone fish is a highly poisonous fish. Its spines suddenly straighten up when under threat and injects a substance into the aggressor which contains an absolutely deadly Toxin called Verruccotoxin which inhibits blood coagulation and affects the respiratory system too. Some people eat this fish, but it is frightfully dangerous.

The Puffer fish which is also a frightfully dangerous fish produces Tetrodotoxin which apparently is near-untraceable. This is the fish which goes by the name ‘Fugu’ fish in Japan. And it is considered a great delicacy, the Fugu Chefs who prepare this are the only ones allowed to do so and they need to undergo a special course and earn a special license to do so.

Nature is indeed wonderful in her myriad manifestations and the camouflage and defence mechanisms she has devised for otherwise seemingly innocuous creatures.
