Yesterday I had been to Dr. Sreedar Rao at Ashok Nagar in Chennai regarding my eye-dryness issue.

All of a sudden from last 2 months I am facing my left eye being dry and he gave me some drops to be used. Still the problem persists. So yesterday he gave me something else to use for next two days, says some allergy and it will go away. :Frustrati

OK while i was reading Sam's posts I stumbled upon this and read through, hence yesterday I did ask Sreedar Rao about Lasik to be done for me and his suggestions since I am seeing him last 5 years now.

"He told me if lasik has to be done, its ideal to get it done when you are early in age, 20-24, so that you enjoy 15-20years without specs. If I do now, I am close to 30, you will enjoy till 40 only after which you will need reading glasses for everything. You can read anything closer. So think about it and let me know, we will do it then."

Hmmm now I know there are alot of happy folks here and I am not scared to take the risk here, because 1% risk = 10years freedom and I really want that.

What I want to know is after 40 are you guys comfortable with day-to-day activites apart from working on laptops and reading? :)

I don't know anyone over 40 who has done lasik earlier. Perhaps because the procedure is comparatively new.

I'm about to be 37 and I've got no trouble reading or with my laptop. Guess I could let you know 3 years from now. :)

Please rule out Ambylopia ( Lazy Eye Syndrome ).

LASIK procedure is quite simple & safe if it is done by an expert with well calibrated latest equipment.
My wife got it done around 5 years back & she has no problems with her eye sight. The procedure was conducted by Dr. Keki Mehta (Renounced Ophthalmologist) in Colaba Mumbai

Where did you get the 1% figure?
That may be the figure for really serious complications (like may be going blind). But the %age for other complications is much higher.

I just read that in this thread. I see more and more examples of only people who have success here clap: so anyways not worried.

I have undergone LASIK LASER treatment for both of my eyes by late 2006.
-2.25 and -2.2 on RS and LS respectively.
I've taken this treatment in LASIK LASER ASSOCIATES ( UDHAY EYE HOSPITALS, CHENNAI)
Experience was good and checking my eye sight periodically. So far so good.

I hate to wear specs (not sunglasses though)

I have gone through the threads and find that the success rate is there but risky. Can someone please specify any genuine eye care centers in Hyderabad which provide LASIK? My eye sight is 3.5R and 3L.

I was wearing spectacles from my childhood & got freedom through the surgery of Intralase aka Bladeless Lasik, which made a total damage of 85000 bucks last month in Uma Eye Clinic, Anna nagar, Chennai.

In ordinary LASIK, the eye flab is cut by a diamond whereas with IntraLase, a special laser is used instead of a diamond to create the flap. Then the usual excimer laser does the ablation.

So in the IntraLase procedure, two different lasers are used, which is why LASIK surgeons sometimes call it "bladeless" or "all-laser" LASIK.

The Ordinary Laser surgery costs between 30k to 40k depending upon the hospitals chosen. The Intralase fluctuates between 75k to 85k.

is it true that one should have a stable eyesight for a specific time period before getting the LASIK surgery done?? If yes what is the minimum time period and are there any precautions to be taken after the surgery throughout the life?

Though the minimum age limit is 18 for performing lasik, it is advisable to do surgery at 25, as human's eyesight becomes stable at the age of 25. That's why the doctors prefer to do lasik on or after 25 years of age.

As you start to get back into your normal daily activities, there are certain things you'll need to avoid -

- Don't get involved in any activities that could result in an object coming into contact with your eyes.
- When you shower, don't allow the water stream to hit your eyes.
- Don't get soap or shampoo in your eyes.
- Don't get dust or pet hair in your eyes.
- Don't rub your eyes.
- Don't go out in bright sunlight without sun glasses.
- Don't let your eyes get too dry - use the artificial tears as often as needed.
- Don't rub your eyes while you're sleeping - a special mask, provided by your doctor will protect your eyes while sleeping.

these are all followed for a month after which you can lead a normal life.

I know it is bit late to ask this. Any updates on your LASIK journey? Did you take the plunge?

I have the following general query to all:

I too am considering custom-LASIK at Nethradhama, in Bangalore. One of my relative got custom- LASIK (it was intralase, wavefront guided and blade-less and all that; in summary supposedly the latest) done at Nethradhama in february '10. The cost was almost double vis-a-vis the similar ones at Mumbai (Shroff's hospital). Both the cases are the wavefront-guided laser based correction. What could be the reason for such significant difference in price?

Having read entire thread, I'm well aware of risks, but am still considering taking my chances.

Here is my request for an honest, no-holds-barred response.

For those who've had lasik done for over 1 year, is there anyone who never faced any of these:
1. Continued eye dryness, but can be easily resolved with some drops
OR
2. Halo around bright lights e.g. car headlights
OR
3. Occasional starbursts/sparks

I wont ask about reading glassed after 40, I dont think that's caused by Lasik, maybe natural eye degeneration
