what lenses do you wear? What's the refractive index and weight approximately?
Do you wear contact lenses too?if so which make and form?Do they feel nice?I gave up on them after a few days, just didn't feel comfortable.

HL Honestly I don't remember! Being a clumsy person I don't go for big brands. I try to go for decent budget High index ones. Weight usually is more for the frame and hence I choose a shell frame. Reason being strength, rigidity of the lens fixtures in a full frame and the light weight. I am sorry I am not of much use to you. Will pm you if i remember anything more. :banghead:
Contact lens - Never tried! I just am too used to the glasses now! People don't recognize me without glasses :D
Hello everyone,
I just visited maxivision hospital branch at hitec-city. They did all tests and confirmed that i am eligible for LASIK. My sight readings are -7 right and -6.25 left. My sister underwent LASIK 3 years back which costed her around 45k. She is perfectly fine now with out any further corrections to her sight. However i was suggested bladeless option which costs around 1.25 lakh :O . When i asked about the normal operation cost. The consultant was giving me all the negative feedback saying that many would develop dry eyes soon by choosing the blade option. He also said since my sight is high i should only go for bladeless option.
I am clueless on whether to believe him or not. Could you please suggest
Also, please suggest if i should check elsewhere like L V prasad or Vasan eye care.
Thanks
Got my LASIK surgery done from L V Prasad. Underwent Femto LASIK procedure which costed me 80,000 . Routine rest for two days and i am good to go. Apart from slight burning sensation while surgery for about a few seconds did not feel any discomfort. Moreover, the doctor constantly telling me the remaining seconds definitely helped me.
I am happy that, finally i could see the world without lens/spectacles. Would definitely recommend it for anyone who are eligible. It has been a habit to search for my spects as soon as i wake up in the morning, still doing the same lol:.
Thanks
Got mine done in April 2012 from Devi eye hospital, Koramangala, Bangalore.
Cost - 36k. Power - ~6 dioptre in both eyes. Been 4 and a half years and absolutely no problems whatsoever.
I am contemplating lasik. However my dads retina specialist recommended that around 35 years of age its not a practice to perform lasik as very soon cataract might develop. He says cataract is becoming very common amongst the middle age of 35 to 45 so why get into lasik now.
I'm anyways going for a check up on Saturday.
Blade Procedure costs 40k and Bladeless is 80k here in Mumbai.

Yes, what your doctor says is correct. Couple of years back my wife wanted to do the same, but the counselling officer warned us that beyond 32 there is no point in doing that (shelling out 50K for couple of years might not be worth it). She even said that its better if the person is around 25 years of age - so we dropped it.
Whenever I go to my eye doctor in order to check my eyes, he always recommends me to go for LASIK. One thing I noticed was that he himself wears spectacles but he is definitely above 40 years of age which implies that LASIK is not that useful for someone above 35/40 years of age?
I am 28 years old and am still thinking if I should go for LASIK. Can people guide me here? Should I go for it?

I got LASIK done at 35, I am 44 now and no problems at all. In fact I have better distance vision than most around me usually.

I'm with @patron...with one caveat: never trust someone who doesn't take his own advice! This is why going to a fat dietician is a bad idea, for example lol:
I got it done at 25 because I got sick of seeing the world as a dull blur every time I woke up in the morning. Was warned (correctly) that my corneal thickness predicted some residual number but went ahead anyway. In my early 40s I now have around (-1,-1.75- spherical only) vision which is perfectly acceptable for someone with ridiculously high spherical AND cylindrical power. It's been good!
While getting LASIK done at any age less than 40 yrs will help to cure you of the specs that you have been using, of course it is not a guarantee that you won't develop far sightedness with age (Presbyopia). It increases with age starting at about 40 yrs.
Even then you won't have an issue with reading far away objects (the problem that people with a minus number face). So just keep that in mind if you are opting for LASIK
Hello everyone, I am 33 and considering LASIK. My power is -9.0 (stable for last 5 years) in both eyes and I normally wear lenses. Could anyone please refer me to a trused LASIK doctor / clinic, someone who is experienced and has the best technology. I live in Mumbai (Andheri west to be precise but the distance is not too much of an issue provided it is within the city). Also, which form of LASIK should I go for? Should I wait for some better technology or go for LASIK now? My current eye doctor keeps recommending I use eye drops for eye dryness but I invariably just buy 1 month worth and give up. How much worse would the dryness get post LASIK? (I hear it gets worse cause the eye nerves / tear ducts are cut)

I can give you three options in no particular order, all of them are reputed ophthalmologists with the latest equipment. Please get the addresses online.
1. Dr. Ashok Shroff (Shroff Eye) at Bandra West.
2. Dr. Keiki Mehta (International Eye Institute) at Colaba.
3. Dr. Cyres Mehta (International Eye Institute) at Colaba.
No. 2 and 3 are Father and Son who practice separately.
The exact treatment/procedure which is best for you would be decided by the Doctor after an examination of your eyes.
Whichever Doctor you choose to go to (if you are driving) go with someone else as they put some drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils before the examination which will blur your vision for around 2/3 hours.
All the best.
Cheers
My eye power is -9 , stable for almost 25 years. I'm close to 43 and was planning to get LASIK done. I've also developed presbyopia, very common in the 40s.
With this power my vision is very blurry and there's hardly anything I can do without glasses.
Any thoughts ? I saw some previous posts discouraging LASIK above 40. Also any recommended doctors or hospitals in Bangalore ?

Don't go for LASIK
Such high powers are beyond the scope of LASIK
There are other procedures instead

Beyond 40 the options are
1. A distance only correction, wherein you will have to wear glasses for reading like anyone else
2. A distance and near correction, (PresbyLASIK, Presbyond many variants are there) In these you are spectacle independent for most activities. Reading fine print or other fine work at near may still require glasses.
However sine your power is -9 none of these are for you
I wanted to share my experience of getting Lasik done. Although, this procedure was done in US, but most of the bits would be generic and might help the readers in India/anywhere else too.
Is Lasik safe? should I go for it? What if I lose my vision. Afterall it is my eyes.
I was skeptical too, like you probably are. It was after 25 long years that I could see clearly without glasses, perhaps the most memorable morning in my life. That was the day after I got the lasik done.
I had been wearing my glasses for about 25 years and they were an indispensable part of me. Every morning started with grabbing my glasses from the side table and then waking up and doing all my chores.
I had been thinking about the lasik for a quite a while now, but could never really make peace with the feeling that my eyes will be operated and what happens if something goes wrong. Years went by and I had kind of made peace with the fact that I had to see the world through a glass window :). It was hindrance too in many scenarios. Be it regular sports, be it adventure sports, driving etc. you always had to be aware of your glasses and adjust yourself to the fact that you have to cautious as you are wearing glasses. Somehow deep within, I wanted to be free and not to be dependent on glasses all the time.
One fine morning, I receive a usual email from the doctor's office for the yearly eye check-up. What the heck? why do I have to do this? I think that was a trigger and sat down and started looking for Lasik options around me. This time, I had made up mind that no matter what, I will get it done. I searched and narrowed down based on the positive reviews the doctors or hospitals had received. I went ahead with Lasikplus as they had pretty good reviews and satisfied customers.
Initial Screening
I took an appointment at Lasikplus and went there by myself for the initial tests, where they would identify if I am a good fit for lasik and what type of lasik is good for me. During the tests, I first went through the normal vision testing machine and usual stuff. After the initial readings, they put few drops in my eyes to dilate my pupils. This is done so that you can't cheat the eye exam, by straining your trying to concentrate and read. In layman terms, your eye muscles would not be flexing and doctors can take exact measure of your eyes. During these tests, they also measure the thickness of your cornea to determine the type of lasik for you.
All, this took about an hour or so and I could drive to my home (40 mins away) by myself. Although, if you schedule your exam towards evening, then I would suggest you take someone with you to drive. Your pupils don't contract and expand after dilation and you become too sensitive to light. The lights from oncoming traffic is very discomforting. If its daytime, then you should be good to drive back home with sunglasses. The dilation stays for about 2 hours.
Pricing
If you are reading this, then chances are, you would have already seen some advertisements for $250 an eye. It a very very rare case that you get such a quote. The realistic quote for both eyes would be between $2500-$4000. I was quoted $3600 after some discounts etc. Many places offer interest free installments or in-house financing based on your credit score.
Types of Lasik
Based on the thickness of your cornea, doctors recommend your either the lasik where your cornea is reshaped using lasers and you are good to go.
Other option is(if your cornea is too thin for reshaping) to insert a lens in your eyes, which will eventually focus the images correctly on your cornea. This is like wearing a contact lens, but inside your eyes, and without you knowing it is there. I think the recovery time is a bit more in this case. Your initial screening will tell what kind of lasik are you fit for.
The D-day
On the day of operation, I went with my wife and daughter. I would suggest that you schedule your appointment towards evening, you that you can go to bed after the operation and have a full night's rest.
I was again tested on this day, if there has been any change in my eyesight. After checkup, they would give you eye numbing drops. The drops start working almost instantly. Would can see things fine, you won't feel any pain in your eyes. you won't feel any pain at all during the procedure. Its 100% pain free.
I was taken to the operation room, the doctor greeted me and asked me to lie down on a table with a machine overhead. They put eye lid clamp and a suction device or something on my eyes for about 10-15 seconds. Then I was asked to get up and move to next table with another machine overhead. This time, it was the lasers and they made a cutout in my eyes. I did not feel anything except I could smell the flesh burning and knew the flap was created. Now the doctor pointed a laser in the eye and asked me to look at it for 10 seconds. Both eyes done and that was it!! Doctor told me it is done and asked for a picture with him :). It was just a total of at max 5 minutes I was in that room. Just after the operation, I could see things, but a little hazy. Doctors told me that it will get better and I should straight away go home and go to bed.
They gave me tylenol pm to help me go to sleep. My wife drove me home and I could feel the sunlight even with the sunglasses on. After about an hour or so, the eye numbing drops started wearing off and I could feel the burn in the eyes. Unfortunately, I could not sleep straight away but kept my eyes closed. It was a bearable burning sensation and feeling if something like a grain of sand is in your eyes. This lasted for about 3-4 hours and after that I slept. If you ask me, I can again and again go through this little burning for what it is worth.
Recovery
I was prescribed an antibiotic solution for eyes (1 week) and artificial tears every hour for a week. You have keep using with artificial tears for about a month or two, with the frequency going down every week. Do not let water/soap go into your eyes for at least 1-2 weeks. Doctors will tell you all these things and its best for you to follow for a speedy recovery.
You start seeing clearly the next day itself and the haze and light sensitivity goes away as days pass by.
I had a follow-up appointment after 3 days and I had a 20/15 vision after the operation. Which is even better than 20/20 (I didn't know it, to be honest )
It has been about 2 months after the operation and still use artificial tears sometimes to hydrate the eyes. Dry eyes is very common and may last for a few months if not more.
Should you go for it? Is Lasik Safe
With technology so advanced, it think it is pretty safe these days. Doctors have also become so experienced with time and with so many surgeries under their belt. My doctor had done about 60,000 operations. Just go with the right doctor/hospital and don't think about saving money. This is a life changing decision, and by far one of the best decisions of my life.
I hope this information helps someone who is on the edge or behind the glass window :)
Thanks for reading!
