Man! that looks so luscious and yummy.

IronH4WK, you're on a spree. Think I should stay away from this thread during Advent.

Speaking of blowing the highlights - I tried out the DRO levels in A35 and was amazed. DRO has 5 levels and the highest ones are just too useful when you want to capture loads of dynamic range without going for the AutoHDR option!
Umm, there's no DOF preview button . As it's an EVF, it shows me the DOF that I'll get without having to press the button.

I'd like to see that test of DRO (what does it stand for?).

My picture is handheld. I feel a better picture can be clicked using tripod at lower ISO. Will give it a try next time.

DRO is Dynamic Range Optimization (As Sony calls it). This feature was existing in the earlier Alphas but wasn't very useful. In the new Alphas, Sony has really made it a very interesting feature. This is a setting you can choose in any of the shooting modes. You can turn it off for normal everyday shots, or turn it on with 5 levels of DRO available depending upon the dynamic range you want to capture.

This picture is taken in the highest setting, that is DRO level 5.

This is how it would look when you shoot with DRO turned off.

Imagine the processing you need to create a picture like the first one, without this feature!

The camera also offers 5 levels of HDR - bracketing from 0.3 EV to 7 EV which will produce an in camera HDR jpeg.

Canon & Nikon has got any similar features?

Re: The Official non-auto Image thread

Looks very good. But is that color cast because of WB or is that how DRO renders?

Oh the color cast is because of the creative mode "Sunset" DRO setting is independent of such creative settings. Alphas are like Fiats.. they got cool features but sells very less

EDIT: removed some amount color cast from the first pic

Nikon has Active D-Lightning, not sure about other models but in D5100 it works brilliantly to preserve Highlight and Shadow detail. It's sensitivity can be changed for desired effect, with Active D-lightning set at max it gives results similar to the one you have posted here.

BTW Nikon D7000 and D5100 share the same Sony sensor, same as Sony A580. D3100 has a Nikon sensor.

Good to know about the D-Lighting. I think it is basically same as DRO in Sony. They still do not have the in camera HDR option though.

D7000 and D5100 has the same improved 16 megapixel sensor as in A35? May be D5100 has got it. In specs it says "Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor" for A35.

I couldn't agree more. And the problem is that people act like enlightened ones when giving out gyaan about how skill is disconnected from camera and all that (without posting any photographs of course) and then go out and tell others not to buy anything other than Canon or Nikon :P. And that reflects in availability of stuff in the market, not much is available as India doesn't seem to be the market. A friend who is currently in UK wants to buy micro four thirds, but he is returning to India this weekend and I am so reluctant in asking him to do that because he might not be able to get all the accessories or native lenses for that system in India.

But, the good part about Sony is that Sony is doing some good work and is getting noticed. Hopefully, the A-77 should put it in a very good position.

EDIT: But this D-Lighting feature works on RAW or only on JPEGS?

Re: The Official non-auto Image thread

About the D7000 & D5100 Sensor:
Quote:
Tech analysis website, Chipworks, has confirmed that the Nikon D7000 features a 16.2MP Sony sensor. This is almost certainly the same APS-C sensor found in the Sony A55 and A580 cameras.
