I have an idea, slightly off-beat!

1. Open the passport and try to locate the permanent residential address of the passport holder.
2. Log on to Infobel Netherlands - Telephone Directory and key in the name and the address in 'Residential Search'; you might get his phone number.
3. Try calling that number and inform the person who answers the call that you have found the passport. Give him/her your details. Most likely that they would call up the passport holder and ask them to collect it from you.

Downside being that you'll lose a couple of hundred rupees for the ISD call. But you'll have one very happy foreigner and the satisfaction that you really helped someone.

EDIT: Dialing code for NL is +31. More info: Telephone numbers in the Netherlands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cheers!

And suppose if a person filed a complain in local police station and he waits for dutch signal from Delhi, just imagine a situation in which ambassy knows that he has found a passport and our police have no idea of it!!Boss this is not a p.c where you can bring icon as a shortcut to desktop, inform the police asap.Think of a different case where police prior comes to know/already know this issue of lost passport and he(our member) inform the police on Monday-police checks with ambassy on same day and ambassy tells police that yes we are aware of this issue since Saturaday----- you will be in SOUP.Period.

You could look up the person's name and search it in facebook or myspace, if they have a profile then message them. MAYBE they check their profile when they are here.

Went to the nearest Police station near my house and met the thanedaar there. He was very polite and helping but only told to either contact the headquaters where they have a passport cell or take it to the other police station of the area where the passport was found, because may be its case of pick pocketing as falling of only passport without bag is dificult.

So I went to the other police station, which is little far. There one constable told me that give it inside with your contact details and they will send to headquaters by post. I asked about special passport cell, he said yes there is one CID passport cell in headquaters. I came back.

Headquaters is a bit too far, but I think it would be the right place to hand it over as also everyone shold go there to log lost passport complain.

Nop no luck. I post details at bottom you can also give a try. Even there is no complete address on Passport, only place of birth.

The passport is not in good condition, looks it got wet and then dried by itself. There are three Indian visas and one egypt visa. Police looked least bothered, I can hand them any time and can be free. But if it reaches right hands then someones trouble can be lessen.

I suggest please remove the identity of the person from your post as posting them on a public forum is not a good idea!

Ym-enjn is doing some basic mistakes the moment he started this thread, perhaps he is not aware of privacy matters which almost all europian citizens follow and may be having a false impression of dutch ambassy's support by avoiding our legal department, the last post of his can put him in a big trouble in which he has posted data of passport holder in open forum like this, absolutely wrong theory he is adopting I must say.He is perhaps too young to judge importance of data mentioned in passport and publishing on net.
In this case I request GTO to remove all personal data he has posted, this is not only illegal action of him same applies for forum as he has used this platform to post such datas.

Delete the details!

Dude, this is TBHP, not lost and found!!

Just go to the HQ as you mentioned and deposit it there. since you already have informed the embassy, they should be able to get on from there.

Thanks.. this is 'the' problem in India.. Do good to others and jump into the well... I have called the embassy, gone to two police stations only for passport of a person who I don't know and will never know. Thats my mistake. I should go and through it back there where it was found.

I PM'ed GTO and one more mod before your post. No thanks.

This guy will never go to police station in hope that they will find his passport for him. In every case he will get in touch with the embassy first and from there he will only go the poilce to lodge a formal FIR and will never find his passport. But, now I'll go and give it at the headquaters..

I think you are doing your duty as a good citizen Ym-enjn. Yes, the path of good is always filled with obstacles and that is where most of us give up. I admire your determination to go and submit it at the headquarters. You have my respect .

Thanks for support. I talked with embassy again and they said to send it by EMS speed post to them as they will be able to find this person in India and help him out. And when I asked to submit to police they assured that if the need be they will themself inform the police and that they will take on the matter from here and took passport number on phone. They thanked me a lot and their appriciation is the reward you don't get often..

So all set and done I will courier it to them today.

Joke: Shall I send my passport too for life time free visa...
