I think Leno will take his script writers with him to his prime time slot, as you all know he is moving to a prime time slot on NBC. which means he is only retiring from the tonight show, we'll still get to see him in a different show whose name I cant recall.
Conan is not bad, I personally didn't like his stuff for a long while. But then I watched some bits of his humor on you tube and it grew on me.
Jon Stewart is in a different league, he is not running for the prime time media entertainer slot, he has his daily show slot on comedy central and the alternative educated crowd truly to himself and my viewership too

He had decided in 2004

In 2004, Jay had announced that he will quit Tonight Show in 2009. And he had announced Conan as his successor then only.
The 5 years time was enough for Jay's staff to move on. Maybe that had started to tell on the show's quality in the recent months, which made me say this:

'Jay Leno Show' Ending Earlier Than Scheduled

Quote:

NBC can't wait to get rid of its failed experiment, "The Jay Leno Show". Instead of ending it on Thursday, February 11 as previously scheduled, the variety show will pull down its curtain two days earlier on February 9.

In the updated programming schedule, NBC puts a repeat of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" on February 10 at 10/9c and two back-to-back repeat of "The Office" on February 11. NBC releases no statement regarding the reason of this change.

Jay Leno is due to return to "The Tonight Show" on March 1. Conan O'Brien previously was in the position for almost eight months, but the declining rating of "Jay Leno Show" has prompted the Peacock to push Jay back to 11.35 hour. Conan preferred to quit "Tonight" with $45 million in compensation.

Jay Leno has so far been blamed as the villain in the exit of Conan from late night talk show. However, he is slated to tell his side of story on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" this Thursday, January 28.
