Completely agreed. Ford's safety presentation (Factory visit earlier this month) stated that mobile texting is nearly as dangerous as drunk driving.

You know, there's a simple solution.

Most phones can be hooked up to the car's systems. So you can make calls from your car's by connecting your phone, yes?

We also have voice recognition software on many devices. You can ask your phone to call XYZ by simply programming it to respond to the command "call XYZ".

Why not put those two together and have the car read out smses for you and for you to dicatate smses back to it?

Blue and Me and similiar options exist.

Problem is we cant understand what sms could be so important that it cant wait for a couple of minutes to be replied to.

However, still, the fact is that its in some way still requiring the driver to take his attention off the road, even for a short period of time. Keeping that in mind, i agree with what Spitfire says - its best to wait till you're done driving.

I think it is extremely dangerous, stupid and irresponsible.

I remember seeing this picture where a woman is doing her lipstick, texting AND somewhat driving.

It is FAR more dangerous than talking.

Re: Texting While Driving: How Dangerous is it?

Apple patent seeks to prevent drivers from texting while driving!

Apple has filed a patent application for a system that aims to make texting at the wheel impossible by blocking drivers from sending messages on cell phones.

The system creates "lock-out mechanisms" to disable cell phones from performing certain functions, such as texting, while one is driving

Re: Texting While Driving: How Dangerous is it?

SMS/text etc basically means a non critical communication.
If it was critical someone would call you because call is the only way ascertaining that the receiver has acknowledged "message received and assimilated".
So I never got why would someone want to read/reply a text immediately? They are never critical and definitely never the emergency kinds.

Perhaps most people have so little self worth that any petty thing like immediate response to sms makes them feel important ... ?

How many of us use our smartphone while driving?

Just came across this article "People Who Text And Drive Associated With Psychopathic Behavior: Study" and the psychic angle of this is really alarming to understand our own personality

Re: Texting While Driving: How Dangerous is it?

I don't often use my phones directly anymore because both iOS and Android mobile can be paired with car Infotainment Systems. However, I still believe that using the touch screen Infotainment Systems while driving causes distractions.

Please go over the following research reports to find out more about the potential risks how infotainment systems can pose dangers to drivers.

Source : https://www.brigglepolan.com/blog/20...gerous-to-dri/

Infotainment Systems Can Be Distracting

As you know, distracted driving is very dangerous and is a significant problem across the nation.
Studies show that in-vehicle technology features in newer cars (namely infotainment systems) are usually too dangerous to use safely. In fact, analyses of using these systems while driving show that infotainment systems are often even more distracting to drivers than cellphone use or even texting behind the wheel.
According to research, infotainment systems require drivers to take their eyes off the road for extended periods of time and often demand that drivers conduct very complicated interactions.
Both voice-based and touch-screen features require drivers to remove their hands, eyes, and even minds off of focusing on the road.

Older Drivers Are At a Heightened Risk
Research indicates that older drivers ages 55-75 take their eyes and attention away from the road for over eight seconds longer than younger drivers ages 21-36 when conducting menial tasks such as setting up navigation or putting on music through the use of in-vehicle infotainment features.
In addition, older adults experienced slower reaction times and elevated visual distractions.
To put this information into context, removing your eyes from the road for only two seconds doubles your risk of an accident.
