the book appears to be on the principle of hydrogen combustion- and that, is definitely possible; this's a different concept from that of the hydrogen fuel cell- in a hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen ions combine to produce high electricity, which is powering a electric motor; in the "electrolysis" process, H and O are separated using electricity, and is directed to a internal combustion engine, which, functions as per the norm.
now, the pros-
a) excellent calorific value from H, so much more power possible from a similar displacement gasoline engine.
b) the cleanest possible combustion.
c) extremely environment friendly, and much more efficient.
d) maybe hydrogen powered cars could outrun gas or methanol powered dragsters...
cons-
a) hydrogen isn't that easy to be electrolysed- almost 85 KWH of electricity is needed to produce 1 kg of hydrogen.
b) although much better, H is also extremely inflammable- meaning, controlled combustion is a tedious task- a lot of forged components will have to be involved...
c) the electrolysis process takes a little time; so the electrolysis chamber would have to be constantly supplied with high voltage, and the production of H may not be proportional to the rate of consumption of engine...
etc...etc...
but DAMN...i had an idea like this a long time back; in fact, i still did till about two- three years ago, until i found out that somebody else was already into it, somewhere in atlantica or something... i believe i had posted a note about this on a thread, "alternate fuels" somewhere else on the forum...
a great idea, though- and somebody is already working on it, which means that we could see a fully functional prototype in a couple of years...
p.s- i don't trust that ebay item, though....
a long time back (more than 15 years ago), my dad had seen an ad in a paper, in delhi, quoting a "new generation mosquito-terminating machine". after sending some petty amount as money order, we received that "new generation mosquito terminating machine" - a fly swatter....
now this could be something on the same lines... |
