Re: Yachts and boats !!!!

@NFB: The place where these barges are being built is NOT an actual shipyard. Shipyards have proper slipway from where you can launch ships into the sea but here we'll need to make special arrangements.
In the rough illustration drawn below:
A,B,C are airbags (similar to ones used in making rubber beds of hovercrafts). Once placed under the barge they will be inflated to take entire load of the barge. Then a tug boat from the sea side will start pulling it outwards. Meanwhile air pressure in airbags C & B will be decreased to give it an outward inclination.
To avoid any mishap & to hold the barge in place, a 250 mt winch will be firmly grounded & attached to the barge. This will hold the barge & will ensure safe slip into the sea. In case of any mishappening, the winch can help us bring the barge back to ground. The whole operation will require HIGH TIDE (max amount of water level upon launching) & may take about 8-10 hours.
I'll be present during the lauch & will make video & shall post it here. Still another 2/3 months or so before this thing is launched.

In my earlier post in this very thread you can see an operational hopper barge.

Re: Yachts and boats !!!!

Thanks for the pics. Is the place in Goa?

What would be the engine specs? Twin propeller or single? Gear box (if any) - mech or hydraulic?

What powers the dredging equipment? I thought that the silt would be piped through separate pipes?

Re: Yachts and boats !!!!

@BSD: The specs are as below. This is snapshot of its ORIGINAL blueprint as approved by me. Surprise surprise.. the place is Alibaug.
This is a hopper barge & NOT dredger. Below is a pic of similar hopper barge being loaded by actual dredger.

@Samsag: I'm yet to meet Karl with her. Offline I'm in process of making an entire new thread for her. Since there are already few threads on resto of Millecento's I wish mine to be little different, if not special.
Keep you fingers crossed.

Sonu

Re: Yachts and boats !!!!

Ah; thanks for that clarification. When I head the name "hopper" - "dredger" automatically came to my mind.

I guess these are the same kind of barges which take Iron ore from the rivers in Goa to ships anchored in the sea? Or do they serve some other purpose? (Like dumping dredging sludge in deeper ocean?) "Hopper" means there would be a "hatch" kind of opening at the bottom, no?

Is MMD approval required? Or the state govt's inland transport department alone involved?

What make would the engines be? Caterpillar?

I am rather surprised that this requires a complement of 25 crew. What for?

Where would the propellers be sourced from? Is sufficient casting skill available?

Re: Yachts and boats !!!!

A few pics from Malaysia, 2012. Telaga Harbour, Langkawi. Some of these babies were on sale. Sigh!
They're becoming quite popular in Kerala too, of late. Can find an increasing number being docked in Kochi.
Wonder what a 33-footer might come to?

Edit: And by the way, one can go on a yachting tour in Langkawi for a relatively throwaway price.
