Re: Biker rams rear bumper Bumper is actually the steel/metal inside the bumper that takes the hit. The outer layer is the plastic and foam that is put in its place to take some initial load. Unless you see an underlying damage to the structure, the hit you have taken is on the plastic. Its not major and its probably something many are living with including me.
Insurance is basically "what if something happens". And claim is something where you decide based on "What if something big happens after this".
So based on your coverage and claim limit you have to decide how much you want to use the insurance. When i had my swift anything and everything goes through insurance. I usually ask the guy responsible to either fix it in his garage or pay the cash i will pay out of my pocket.
And for my swift i ensure i did something or another once a year and break even the insurance amount i paid. I didnt do it purposefully but when it does happen it was always the front bumper or the rear bumper one way or another. Now thats not the case with my Jetta. If expense is less than 10K i take it up for i save 10K in NCB easily in the first 4 years. Also i calculate "what happens if the claim is big" as a scenario and say anything other than Bumper is going to cost a bomb so just fix the bumper myself.
