Re: Kerala MVD announces crackdown on "artistic" number plates

Just received the same information on WhatsApp, with the 30% going to the officials. Also seems that people are being fined per alloy wheel, and for anything that is not OEM. Meaning if you had steel wheels that you upgraded to alloys, you are liable to be fined. The messages say the drive will continue for 2 months at least. Sad if true, but going by the huge surge of complaints in social media, there does seem to be a witch hunt in progress. Why allow non-OEM parts to be imported and sold in the first place? Surely shops selling these contraband items should be shut first. Not a day goes by without something interesting(read outrageous) to wake up to. High time modders and specialists take this and settle it in court. It’s ok to sell an unsafe car or a lemon, but not to do small mods? The OEMs must be the happiest right now.

Re: Kerala MVD announces crackdown on "artistic" number plates

The MVD checking was going on well before these voice notes started doing the rounds on whatsapp. On the 1st of September, I saw the mobile squad of the MVD doing the rounds in this part of town and stop two modified cars - one Figo with a big spoiler and one Polo with a different grill and dark tints. One cant blame the MVD officials for doing their job, those were significantly modified cars.

They seemed to have taken a bit of a pause with the recent inclement weather. Who knows what news can be trusted with these voice notes, people have even speculated that it is some prankster who is circulating these since the voice from the recent ones sounds exactly the same as those that were circulating last year.

Incidentally, I received this image today, supposedly this is part of the "ongoing crackdown". As always, dont trust everything that you read on the internet.

Re: Kerala MVD announces crackdown on "artistic" number plates

As said lots of voice messages circulating around. Till now I did not find a guy with first hand information.

The reasons stated are shocking: Company logo stickers (for which you need to pay advertisement tax it seems), stickers with names of children or family members, subtle differences in number plate etc..

No idea how much true and how long this madness will continue.

Re: Kerala MVD announces crackdown on "artistic" number plates

There is a Mathrubhumi report, which more or less confirms the "rain of fines:" Confirms most points in the previous few post, except there is no 30% cut for the officer.

Re: Kerala MVD announces crackdown on "artistic" number plates

Have heard these rumours doing rounds since few days. I happened to notice quite a few police and MVD checks between Trivandrum and Kottarakkara over part two weekends. On one instance the car ahead of me was waved down, but was then told to proceed without stopping.

My car has the ubiquitous fake IND plates and a small sticker on tank lid. Maybe it's time to get rid of those.

MVD's side of the story:

https://www.mathrubhumi.com/auto/new...-mvd-1.5097645

The takeaway from the story is that instead of individual car owners, a pressure group namely, Car Accessories Dealers and Distributors Federation, has taken it up with the Transport Commissioner.

Re: Kerala MVD announces crackdown on "artistic" number plates

One of the benefits of having a Communist party at the helm is one size fits all policy I guess, if they are following the letter of the law in a uniform manner then I guess one can't complain.

However given that the accessories have been purchased legally and the Govt has collected tax on the sales, it is a bit unfair to stop people from using accessories.

The point of these plates is so that the text can be read using a licence plate recognition software. Similar plates are used by countries across the world, and is issued by the relevant transport authorities.

Here is a sample of a licence plate issued in the state of Queensland, Australia.

Yes. The setup is capable of capturing retro reflective and non-reflective number plates. See the above specification from a finalized MVD tender for implementing Artificial Intelligence Cameras and exclusive control rooms to track and charge traffic violations, which includes

1. Speed Violation Detection System (SVDS) on roads and vehicle mounted
2. Red Light Violation Detection System (RLVDS)
3. ANPR and Artificial Intelligence Camera Modules
4. Unauthorized Parking Violation Detection System

Artificial Intelligence Camera systems are so smart and capable to detect vehicles violating any entry zones, For Eg. a heavy vehicle entering a heavy vehicle not allowed area, travel through one way, identifying the rider count on motor cycles, wearing helmets or not etc. can be automatically be captured and can be charged. Since this will be integrated to VAHAN, Sarathi, PUC, Insurance database, vehicles registered across India can be charged for any violations in Kerala. As per the information, there will be more than 700 locations of deployment.

If everything goes well, the dream of responsible and disciplined driving on Kerala roads are near. Since these are automated, there should be a standard atlest.

Re: Kerala MVD announces crackdown on "artistic" number plates

Smart signals are in place near my house and have been active for few weeks now. Let's see if they start charging the violators (I still see people stopping beyond the stop line, vehicles blocking the free left, buses block the left lane to urn right etc. But overall, the traffic stretches a lot longer now when the signals become operational and I now take the inner roads to bypass them.

Talking about crackdown, I have been seeing severe checking at Kadavanthara for the past two weeks now and yesterday, I saw the MVD at 3 major junctions while coming back from office. They were manually taking photos of bikes, cars and even huge trucks at signals but didn't question them (Maybe using the e-challan app?). In fact, my friend who owns a business has requested the MVD to give specifications of sticker size that can be placed on commercial vehicles. Also heard 6 advocates have registered a complaint with high court on this move. Let's see what happens.

Re: Kerala MVD announces crackdown on "artistic" number plates

Yesterday on my way to town, I saw a traffic policeman stop a Honda Amaze, and ask the driver about led lights on his grill, they were blue/red/blue.

That reminded me, I have 2 TBHP stickers on my car, are they to be removed. I don’t want to be stopped and fined. Any thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.

Friends, please watch the joint Commisioner's interview(seeing your locations, am assuming that you know malayalam) posted by mallumowgli, post #53. The official clearly says there's absolutely no issue with stickers. Let the T BHP stickers remain

In both my cars Team BHP stickers were displayed on to the rear windshield, which from the Commisioner's view, is against the rules as they will change the property of disintegration of glass (will break up into bigger chunks). So they had to go.
