Most of the cheating using the Rs 200/- trick I have seen in Hyderabad happens when one pays by card. This probably means that the dealer is hand-in-gloves with the attendants on this.
Paying by card means that you cannot drive off if someone tries the Rs 200/- trick. The best policy in my opinion therefore is to
1. Get down from the car and ensure the meter is set to 0.
2. Ask for the bill
3. Pay only after the fuel is filled . (most often the attendants try to rush you if they realize you are paying by card... this is where they usually stop the meter in between....you are too busy signing the card to notice the trick they are pulling off)
4. If paying by card, check with the mobile alert to ensure no double swiping has happened. Also check the transaction amount.

Looks like IOCL pumps are repeated offenders. Though we can not hold IOCL responsible for all these malpractices, they can easily control such wrongdoings. Looks like the owners of the pump tampering the calibration of the dispensing unit.

One of my relative narrated a story, he used to fill diesel in his Swift from an IOCL pump in Udumalpettai, Tamilanadu. I am not sure about the name of the pump, but it is the pump located on Pollachi-Palani main road and has a Srikrishna Sweets Outlet. One day he felt there is some thing wrong with engine and felt its behavior is very sluggish. He took the vehicle to ABT Maruti at Pollachi and they said the fuel is not pure. My relative said the diesel which they took from the fuel tank smelled like kerosene. Anyway he said me the story many days after this incident. Else I could have asked him to keep the sample of the fuel.

I second that. I re-filled diesel twice in IOC pump in Andheri Mumbai, Link Raod, opp lotus petrol pump. My car started emitting a lot of black smoke on acceleration and also started missing a beat while in a high gear and low speed. Also, It never happened that the reading showed 1 mark less after re-filling the full tank of fuel. It happened at this pump.

The Diesel section in this pump is close to the road. As soon as you stop the car you are surrounded by group of 4-5 people. One pretends to wash your wind shield and one asks 'oil paani saar?' urging you to open the bonnet. I must have fallen prey for something and got less and adulterated fuel in the bargain.

I Had made up my mind, never again I am re-filling at IOC pump in Andheri Link Road Mumbai, but now after reading this thread, IOC pumps are history for me.

I had similar experience with one of the HP petrol pumps near Chakan, Pune. After doing a tank full, the meter read 51 ltrs of diesel, when i20 capacity is of only 45.
I immediately called up a friend who was working with HP. He asked me buy 1 liter of diesel in a 1 liter mineral water bottle. The meter read accurately 1 liter after filling the 1 liter bottle appropriately.

So I check with the Hyundai guys. They told that there is always a room for 7-8 liters of more fuel than the stated tank capacity. So when we fill the tank upto the brim, the total amount of fuel in the vehicle is more than the stated tank capacity.

In my case, the attendant and the petrol pump owner din't budge over my allegations, and were continuously denying the charges during our argument. Also the 1 liter check confirmed that there was no meter tampering.

But in Satya's case, the attendant agreed to have cheated. No doubt we have to be very cautious while filling fuel at petrol pump, these guys don't leave any chance to cheat the customers.
Satya, if you could try this 1 liter check on that fuel pump, may be you would have strong evidence to put up your case.

This is so very common. I am not sure if the pump owner's are hand in hand with this. The dealer anyways earns about 2 rs per liter of fuel which means that his daily earning can range close to a 60-70 k. This IMHO is a trick by the attendants to earn extra buck. This is also not city specific and i have seen this happening all around.

The best way to avoid this is by

1. Ensuring 0 before delivery
2. Making sure you are not distracted by anyone else while watching the reading (PUC guy, polish/oil sales person, other attendant asking to fill up some form, attendant asking details about the car etc)
3. Ensuring you fill in fuel to the brim instead of filling fuel of 1000 INR

I agree the OMC are least bothered about compliant which i am sure they must be getting in thousands everyday.

I've been filling from this pump. Now i'm apprehensive of going there.

If it is about getting out of the car and ensuring that the attendants don't short fill you, that can be accomplished if you are careful and don't fall for their distractions.

But its about meter tampering where quantity of fuel dispensed is itself suspect as it appears to be in this case. Then nothing can be done other than avoiding this pump.

Wow!! This happened exactly to my friend in his Amaze. It was well past midnight and was raining heavily some time last month when he decided to drop in for diesel at A2B petrol pump in BTM. He too go a bill for some 37 liters and the attendant refused to believe that the capacity was only 35 liters. My friend being on a passive side accepted and came back like an idiot.

Just a thought but most cars can fill a lot more than what the service book quotes. This is because there a lots of little pockets which are not taken into the computation.

I think this is a widespread IOC scam...

Generally always fill fuel from the same pump but on an occasion since i was running low, pulled into an IOC pump (the one right after copper chimney & before the first signal on Haji Ali)

Told the attendant to fill auto-cutoff full tank, checked that the meter was at zero, got the fuel filled till the first cut-off, paid the bill though i thought it was unusually high & left as was in hurry.

Only after i got back did i realize that they had charged me for 47.53 litres of fuel for a Hyundai Verna with a 45 litre tank!!!
Wherein i drove the car there without any out of fuel issues.

Unfortunately, since the day had gone by, couldnt do anything about it. The vehicle number also isnt mentioned in the bill i am attaching below so no way to prove they filled it in the Verna. This is after i checked to make sure the pump meter was reset to zero before filling.

I asked the folks at this IOC bunk to fill petrol in a 3L Castrol engine oil can last week to check their meter calibration. I seemed just fine. Also, they did so quite willingly (and also checked with their 5L calibrated can).

Sir, the density of petrol is quite wrong! AFAIK it should be in the range of 0.71-0.77kg/cc (710-775 kg/cu.m).

I did read someone post here that Verna can take some 7-8L beyond what's mentioned in the manual.

Looks like we need to confirm the actual capacity of the fuel tanks from respective manufacturers. The same case has been reported in Honda Amaze, so in my opinion there may be some variation in the stated capacity of the fuel tank and actual capacity of the fuel tank.

A car's fuel tank can generally hold 5-10% more fuel than the total capacity mentioned in the specifications. This is because the tank has many small air-pockets, which are not calculated and the manufacturers generally round off the capacity figures to the lower multiple of 5 (30-35-40-45, ever wondered?). So, a 45 litre tank can easily hold 47-48 litres of fuel.

This happened to me at the BP petrol pump on Begur road, right at the Belue-Devarachikkanahalli junction. I asked for Rs.800 worth of petrol to be filled. The counter was showing Rs.200 as i got out of the car. Before i could stop him, the attended had started filling up. I decided to wait and mentioned to him clearly that its for Rs. 800 as he was filling.
He stopped filling when the counter reached Rs.800. I was fuming when he started removing the nozzle. I shouted at him and said I knew he started filling when it was at Rs.200. He refused to acknowledge.
The supervisor came and i explained the situation. I said i will not pay anything and said i will report this. The supervisor finally apologized and asked the attendant to fill up to Rs.1000.
I never fill up here and it was the only occasion(was visiting a friend on Begur road). Advised him of the antics at this pump.
