Re: Do you give way for ambulances

I always give way and also make people give way to AMBULANCE. We never know who is inside and what is their condition, certain times even the driver or the hospital staff may not realise the patient condition untill they reach hospital. It could be one of our dearests as well. Irrespective of siren sound, strobe light alert we should give way to ambulance. It's an emergency vehicle and it has a rights to move traffic free. Politicians travel traffic free with convoy, even if it is not emergency in our country. Why not AMBULANCE ???

That's right. I'm surprised there are people who still don't realise that.

It got me thinking, I gave way to the ambulance twice and yet it made no significant progress at all. In fact it was somehow behind me again, largely due to the size of it. And the lad who rode off, well they were having a better time than me I hope. I can only assume that that answer for giving way was originally meant for cars and in less crowded spaces. What do you guys think?
Majority of us lack the civic sense to give way to emergency services, be it ambulances, fire trucks, or lone police vehicles themselves.

Here in the US, it is a criminal offense to block the way out of an ambulance or fire truck. We as Indians need to think that it could be one of our loved ones in the ambulance.

Re: Do you give way for ambulances

I always give way and atleast from what I have seen in Bangalore, everyone from cars to autos to 2 wheelers to buses always try to give way. Considering Bangalore's traffic in peak hours, it is not easy but even in the most hopeless of traffic or gridlocks, I see that somehow a path is carved for the ambulance to proceed. Have seen this even in the evening 5-6pm gridlocks in places like the ORR.

One of the rare occasions I am impressed with my fellow motorists on the road.

Re: Do you give way for ambulances

I have encountered 3 broad India specific scenarios:

For the purpose of understanding the last 2 cases, ambulances are limited to 70 kph in city an 90 kph in highways.
  • In B2B city traffic, apart from me and other vehicles around me leaving space. It is also the traffic police that have to prioritize the direction of the ambulance. I have seen this in action few times in Madras. So the most I've heard the siren continuously is about 5 minutes at most.
  • In suburban/2-lane highway setting where my speeds are lower. Slow down and make way and the ambulance will do the rest. In this case, you might not catch up.
  • In higher speed highway run (mostly 4+ lane) where my speed is higher. I make way when the ambulance catches up and make a clean pass and making sure he doesn't get impeded by my move. This is the case where I've heard the siren a lot longer. Given the ambulance speed limit, I end up catching the ambulance when I slow to make space. So if I pass, I do about 110 and create as much clearance between myself and the ambulance.

In case anyone has doubts as to the right answer to OP’s question:

Police nab car driver who refused to give way to ambulance

Re: Do you give way for ambulances

Not only I give way to ambulance, I usually lookout for those around me who may not and try to block them so they don't end up ruining efforts of those who have made way.
IMO, generally 4 wheelers give way to ambulance rather quickly. Its the folks on 2w who somehow pretend to not care, infact a bunch of them would often try to follow the ambulance to get a quicker way.
In worse case scenario, when I find myself unable to make way - I find extreme left or right side of the road and stop there until it has passed.

Re: Please give right of way to Ambulances & Emergency Vehicles!

Mumbaikars are very good when it comes to giving way for ambulances.
What makes my blood boil are the literal ambulance chasers in the form of two wheelers, autos and even private cars who try to take advantage of the opened up space to get ahead, effectively penalizing those of us who moved aside for the emergency vehicle.

Re: Please give right of way to Ambulances & Emergency Vehicles!

I have noticed that as far as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu go, people always do their very best to make way for an ambulance; even at traffic lights or in a traffic jam.

Delhi, on the other hand, is quite the opposite (in my experience, which of course is limited). The ambulance and its occupant can go to hell, *I* shall do everything I can to gain that available inch.

Cheers

Re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

This one makes my blood boil. How can one be so inhuman that they intentionally block Ambulance. Kudos to Kerala police for fining this sorry human 2.5L and looks like his license too is revoked. Thank God it did not result in an accident. Such vile people should not be allowed to be on road.

It is not 2.5L, not sure if there is any fine exists to that tune.

It is just mere 6K for this sadly, but instant punishment is home delivered.

I have generally found drivers in Kerala to be very considerate towards emergency vehicles no matter how bad a driver they are otherwise. And for those few that are ignorant, nothing like a good "tuition" from the MVD (with the necessary "tuition fees" of course). However, I am a little concerned about the footage. It seems to be taken from the ambulance most probably by the driver holding his mobile camera (not a dashcam). If true this is a problem.

Ideally it should be mandated that all emergency vehicles have dashcams running all the time. That way such mischief by the car driver can be fined. Not just that, in case the ambulance gets into an incident due to unsafe driving (particularly when not in emergency), the driver of the ambulance should be taken to task. In the case of an accident involving the ambulance and the car, I think it should be mandated that the driver has the dashcam footage, after all, we expect our emergency vehicle driver to be better trained.

Do not know whether I should feel "proud" for the consideration shown or feel "ashamed" about the boorish behaviour of our brethren here in "Gods own country". Normally it feels great when proven right but may be not in this way.

Agree that the car driver was acting weirdly. But, if one looks at the video around 25 seconds, there is enough space for the ambulance to overtake, the car is on the extreme left of the road. Ambulance folks may also have instigated the situation, we also do not know what happened before the video was shot
