Apparently this highly talented driver with a learners license managed to get his baleno to jump 20 ft across the road on to the roof of a house.

I have seen a similar location in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, not sure though whether it is the same location. The driver and the occupants must be really born with a golden luck to have survived this accident. The science of physics seems to have worked just appropriately with the right speed and angle to have landed up there. Would be interesting to know what was the impact on the occupants of the house.

Looks like a nose landing than a perfect landing, see the markings at the roof edge where concrete is chipped off.

Probably the raised edge of the road helped taking off.

Let us not get into the usual light-weight structure debate once again, and start the baleno-bashing for the umpteenth time, atleast in this particular context without knowing the details as to what exactly happened.
Any car if driven carelesly or rashly at high-speed on such a narrow, winding hilly road can end up like this, and it doesn't matter if the car is a Volkswagen or Maruti.

We don't know what exactly happened and just because it is a Baleno, let us not assume that it ended up on the roof-top just because of the single reason that the car has a low kerb-weight.

The real culprit in almost all such cases is not the car, but the person who drives the car in the most dangerous and reckless ways, without knowing or trying to know the limits of the car.
In the hands of such drivers, even a Mercedes Benz will end up like this, and so this is not a case where we need to drag the kerb-weight issue as the prime suspect.
Of-course, it may have an impact, but from these pictures there are lots of other more probable reasons for any car to end up like this.

Please don't take these kind of things personal. Nor did I said that Baleno is a bad car. 99% these kind of things happen due to driver and 1% it can be a mechanical failure too.

What I was trying to say is due to light weight, car just flew and landed at that much distance further. If it was a heavier car at that same speed it may have landed in that gap between road and building. Simple physics. That's it.

Thanks for sharing, Dr.Naren! This unique accident surely deserves its own thread - moving out.

Seriously surprised. Weight notwithstanding, car seems to have hit something that made it ascend/eject upwards (after probably descending from a slope) & brakes stopped the car at the right time!

Still, the fact that the link rods & arms stayed intact & functioned to the extent that they towed it out after such an impact is interesting. Looking at the damaged concrete roofing, underbody damage should be substantial.

Moreover, just 4 hr response time to arrange for beams and concrete slabs to tow out the car.

Extraordinary chain of events!

Re: Baleno lands on the roof of a house!

First, there was this:

This time the car managed to make it to the roof!

Wonder how: the car seems to have had enough speed/lift to land on the roof, but yet, it stopped within a few feet of landing.

Surprised that the roof has held up despite the force exerted during landing and the weight. Also, wouldn't it have been easy to get a crane to lift the car and get it on the road than do this rails+concrete method.

I am surprised no one has noticed the big "L" sign on the rear windshield. A new and unexperienced driver was maybe driving ?

As per the news reports, it was driven by retired Army officer.

Just found this video. Watch till end, it shows how they were recovering the car.

Quote:
Initial reports point to loss of control. The incident occurred in Sarkaghat of Mandi district. The Maruti Baleno in question would have had to be at a considerable speed to maintain flight after taking of and make a landing on the roof. It’s a good 20 feet or so. The car got its flight due to the road barriers.

If the rooftop landing surprised you, so will the ingenious plan to retrieve the car. Locals came together swiftly to place three metal beams from the road to rooftop to create a strong base upon which concrete slabs were placed to create an impromptu path for the car to be driven from onto the road.
