Ladakh / Manali rental bikes get operational area limits

Thanks to Syed Mohammed Yasir for sending this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP page!

The Ladakh Bikers Co-operative Limited and Manali Biker's Association have set new rules for rental bikes after accusing each other of not honouring a verbal understanding they had earlier. Under the new rules, no rental JK 10 registered bikes will be allowed to enter Himachal Pradesh and not HP registered rental bike will be allowed to enter Ladakh. The final pick up and drop off point for all JK registered and HP registered will be Serchu.

If they fight like small kids and tourism to Ladakh plummets, the reduction in the number of tourists for a few years might well restore the environment in the region.

Seems like a win win situation to me.

It is time that territorial disputes are put to rest by the GoI. These foolish Associations with smug locals like to behave like toll trolls. Every tourist spot has some nuisance or other from the locals; no outside vehicles unless these guys are paid off, violence against outside vehicles etc
All this would be solved if we had a Central Vehicle Registration and not a state registration.

The rule of law has become so weak that every gang of thugs is taking law in their own hands and deciding which vehicle will ply on which roads and in which area. And these people are openly intimating their 'rules' to the Government Authorities, which are spineless.

In the entire drama, these unions/gangs are ultimately killing themselves by creating problems for tourists.

Under what authority are these mere trade unions banning plying of vehicles which can legally ply anywhere in India (barring special permit areas)? What about those bike rentals who are not a part of either of the two groups? Will the tourists now be heckled? Police need to make an official statement regarding these "bans" to put these people in their place.

These middle men's back should be broken throughout rule of law. This is against the spirit of our constitution. The root cause of the problem is that the JK gets its own constitution and these trade union activities are legal in JK. HP unions are followers, trying to make money as much as possible. Rental bikes are very convinient for tourists, tourist interests should be protected.

The J&K Ranbir Penal Code is an exact parallel of the IPC and are both derived from the same British code from the late 1800s. Trade union activities and agitations are quite legal throughout India so I am not sure what part of this situation is more illegal or legal in J&K versus the rest of India.

It is entirely up to the authorities in J&K and HP to crack down on this nonsense - they're only not doing so because all these unions are politically connected.

Till few years back, it was the hiring of self drive cars which was in the limelight. Now again the bikes.
Simple solution is buy a 2nd hand bike, ride the planned circuit and sell it off or better still use your own bike.
