It is indeed gruesome.
But this has been doing rounds in email for some time.
Similar to how cockpits of planes are sometimes tested, by shooting a frozen chicken at it!

That's not cockpit. Thats the intake vanes of a jet engine! IIRC, it's actually called the chicken test. The hapless bird is sent on its way using a chicken gun or chicken cannon.

It is also done to test canopies of fighter jets. (Not a required test, but a freestyle test nonetheless).
This Porsche became a cockpit in this case...
