Re: The best Twisting & Turning roads of India

I live in Dehradun and for last one year I have been travelling to the remote hill station Chakrata & nearby places, almost every week for work. The entire hill stretch (almost 45 kms) on the route is in immaculate condition as it is maintained by the army and is used by them quite extensively. Its a pleasure to drive on these twisties, the roads are superb and the view is just amazing.

Udaipur to Ranakpur. This is still the road less travelled. It involves a lot of turns and twists and one can still see bullocks drawing water from the wells.A very narrow road, only one vehicle can move at a time and coming traffic has to get down from the road or vice versa. But it’s still one of the best road that I have driven.

Re: The best Twisting & Turning roads of India

Any mountain road that has a flow to it with sparse traffic should qualify for some driving fun. If the scenery chimes in, that is even better. Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra and Kerala have tons of such beautiful roads especially around the western ghats. The popular ones may not offer driving pleasure on account of traffic. The others, while not being proper destinations as such, are lovely to drive to. Am sure every state has their share of these beautiful roads. Something like this in the Nilgiris for example comes to mind.

That is true. It passes through a forest too and skirts the mighty Kumbhalgarh fort. Both Ranakpur (temples) and Kumbhalgarh are a must visit.

Re: The best Twisting & Turning roads of India

For me its from Abu Road (base) to Mount Abu in Rajasthan. Around 20-22 kms of single lane undivided road with twist and turns and decent gradient also.

Found a few videos of me and my Z800 going up Chorla ghat slowly:

And this one at Khambatki which is a one way ghat and a delight since they made it 3 lane:

Please ignore the audio quality in these videos.

Re: The best Twisting & Turning roads of India

For the roads I have traveled on, I would pick Siliguri to Kurseong road. It was pitched dark with less than 10m visibility at 11:30 am in the morning. The elevation gained per curve is huge and a fantastic diesel engine like that of Ecosport had to be driven in first clog only for all the curves encountered. Most of the crossings with other vehicles had to be done with inches on either side. Its only after you have reached Kurseong and you are above clouds, things clear out.

Re: The best Twisting & Turning roads of India

A couple of routes that come to my mind:

Nilambur to Bandipur stretch through the forest roads is really an underrated route. There are no hairpins but after the recent roadworks, it has become a joy to drive through the trees and forests. Added benefit- its one of the shortest route between Kochi-Bangalore (less than 500 KM) and has very few tolls on the way (just 2 in Mysore and Thrissur). Time taken will be higher though, due to slower average speeds compared to Salem route.

The return route from Ooty to Bandipur via Gudalur- I had a lot of fun in this route on my FZ25, during a recent trip to Ooty from Bangalore. It really brings out the rider instincts in you, while navigating the sharp twists and turns through the forests and breathtaking views. Its a ride that tends to stick in your memories for a long time and I would advice all riders here to give this route a try atleast once.

Re: The best Twisting & Turning roads of India

I have driven and ridden on almost all ghat roads in Tamilnadu, - Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, Sirumalai, Pachamalai, Kolli hills.

The best among these according to me is the Kolli hills. 70 hair pin bends one way, and wow, an enthusiast's heaven it is.

The best Twisting & Turning roads of India-kh.jpg

That's the reason I have ridden there 6 times, on 8 different motorcycles.
1. Honda CBR250R
2. First gen KTM Duke 390
3. Bullet Electra 350
4. 2017 KTM Duke 390
5. KTM Duke 250
6. 2018 Yamaha R3
7. Yamaha FZ1
8. 2018 KTM RC390

It never gets boring to me. We have done group rides 4 times of that 6. And I have done 2 times solo.

Here are a few clips of some of those rides to Kolli hills.

First group ride with BHPians, I was riding the 2017 Duke 390 (lead bike) followed by bhpian VW2010 on his Yamaha FZ1. Pardon the audio quality

Second group ride with BHPians, I was riding the 2018 Yamaha R3 (lead bike) followed by bhpian Niranjan on my 2018 RC390

This was my first solo ride on my first gen KTM Duke 390

This was my last solo ride on my 2018 KTM RC 390

I love riding there. Looking forward to another group ride after the lockdown.

Re: The best Twisting & Turning roads of India

Twisty turning roads go well with crests and troughs in my opinion so my humble submission to this thread would be the road going around KBR park in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. I am a very satisfied Hyderabadi due to its existence

Re: The best Twisting & Turning roads of India

Western Ghats might have some decent twisties, but they hold no water to the ones up north in the Himalayas.

On a recent trip in Himachal Pradesh traversing the Himalayas on a Himalayan (heh ), we had a swell time - there are so many twisties that I doubt any of my pics would do them justice. But if I had to put one, I'd just put this of a small mountain near Tirthan valley in HP.

1. Udumalaipet-Munnar-Kochi
2.Theni-Kumily-Munnar

4. Amboli Ghats
5. Charmadi and Agumbe Ghats
6. Wayanad Churam
7.Salem-Yercaud
8. Kolli Hills(of course the best for a driving enthusiast in South india)
9.Ghat roads in Bhutan
10. Siliguri-Kalimpong( not driven here but been in a share taxi and it was a scary ride)
11. Amba Ghat(Kolhapur-Ratnagiri)

Those are great roads and the traffic is so disciplined on the single lane road. The 3 lane ghat section must be a dream to drive on. Lucky to be situated next to such roads.

Great videos, nice slow riding. Thanks for sharing.
