I would wish for crash barriers too, especially after witnessing so many accidents where vehicles jump over the median and collide with oncoming traffic!!

In a way, this also helps reduce cattle, pedestrians and cyclists crossing the median.

Yes, vehicles jumping the median was precisely my point.

Rest I can accept in an Indian context (pedestrians, cyclist, etc), but a vehicle crossing over median and thereby increasing a fatality from 1 to 10 (what would have otherwise been 1, had it been contained in it's carriageway), solely due to unsound hwy engg practices (viz. missing crash barrier) is simply unacceptable.

Ah cattle ! Konkan region has umpteen cattle lingering on the roads. On NH17 Goa to Bombay, almost every few kms you need to slow down as the bovine traffic has occupied one side/whole of the road. If you ask me, the presence of large group of cattle on the highway gave Konkan NH17 a distinct identity But it's not safe for them too once a fast four 4 lane highway comes in place.

I rode on this route recently. If anyone can, please avoid using NH66 between Mangaon and Aravali. The route beyond Aravali is in great condition and it appears that all pictures posted here are from those sections.

The entire route upto Sawarde and thereon a bit till Aravali is completely messed up. Would completely avoid this at night.

Excellent post guys. Especially the Twitter reposts that documented progress chronologically is really helpful. Would you advice driving along the NH-52 and NH-66 from Mumbai to Palakkad over the frequented NH-48 route?

Hello Guys,

Planning to do a road trip from Chennai to visit family in Goa later this month.

Normally I do bangalore - NICE Road - AH47 upto Tadas - take left and get to Ankola and from there up to goa. Takes me 13 hours to reach MArgao.

However this time i want to do the coast route ie: Bangalore mangalore - NH66 to Goa. The last time I done this route was in 2015 where everything was under construction.

If anyone who has travelled earlier this year before or after the lockdown can please let me know the condition of the roads i would be very grateful.

Much better now and a very thoughtful and interesting detour.

I did read about the latest in some other thread on this route till Ankola. Let me find it.

After trying a number of routes for the last 10 years, I settled on this one. The idea was to use the AH47 as much as possible before Hubli because at Hubli I found the roads take a turn for the worse and the Dharwad-castlerock section is none the better. Also the Tadas-Kalaghatli-Yellapur-Ankola section although single lane is a beautiful road with very little traffic ... a dream road for a turbo charged vehicle like the vento.

Completed the MLR - GOA - MLR trip. The roads are good all the way. There are some deviations due to road widening, but nothing that bothers. Driving in the night can get a little tricky as predicting these deviations might get difficult.

Anyone driven very recently on the NH17 from Mumbai upto Ratnagiri, planning to go next week to Rajapur. Since the work started have always taken the Mumbai-Pune-Karad-Kokrud-Malkapur-Pachal route. A long one but better road condition.

Any inputs from anyone having made a trip recently would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
