Uttar Pradesh: The Land of Expressways

With the current expressways and the ones announced, Uttar Pradesh is the state in India with the maximum number of expressways.

The Yamuna and the Agra-Lucknow Expressway are already complete, while the Purvanchal, Ganga, Bundelkhand and the Gorakpur link expressway are still under construction.

The best part is the planning, linking all expressways, so as to have a seemless traveling experience. This boosts everything including tourism.

Uttar Pradesh: The Land of Expressways-expressway.jpg

Some details of the expressways can be read here: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/stree...ays-india.html (The underrated size & quality of upcoming expressways in India)

Let's look at the details of the different expressways in Uttar Pradesh.

1) The Yamuna Expressway / Taj Expressway.

Status: Completed.

From: Agra. To: Greater Noida.

Distance: 165 kms.

Total lanes: 3 + 3 = 6 (extendable to 8).

Total Cost of Project : Approx. 13,000 crores.

Opened on: 09th Aug. 2012.

Description: The Expressway cuts in half the travel time from New Delhi to Agra, the city that is home to India’s top tourist attraction, the Taj Mahal. Apart from providing a fast travel corridor between New Delhi and Agra, the Expressway opens up avenue for industrial and urban development of the region. The Yamuna Expressway corridor is bound to have huge impact on the economic and industrial growth not only of Uttar Pradesh but adjoining states e.g. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana in the coming years.

Government website: http://yamunaexpresswayauthority.com/

Quote:
In a first for military aviation in India, Indian Air Force on May 21, 2015 successfully landed a French Dassault Mirage-2000 on the Yamuna Expressway near Raya village, Mathura, at about 6.40 am. The drill was part of more elaborate trials to see how many other highways can be used for emergency landing of defence aircraft. This first ever road landing by the IAF came close to another test landing by two Mirage-2000 aircraft on an airstrip in Akhilesh Yadav's Saifai village in Etawah.[1] The Uttar Pradesh government had given a green signal on May 11 to convert a 3 km stretch of the upcoming Agra-Lucknow Expressway into a full-fledged road runway to the air force. Just as the Saifai landings, the IAF kept the operation secret and only took the authorities concerned on board. The IAF had prohibited all kinds of photography—still or video and deployed its photographers and videographers. The Central Air Command, in a meeting with former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, had made a formal presentation to the state government about converting a 3 km straight stretch of the Agra-Lucknow expressway into India's first road runway.

re: Uttar Pradesh: The Land of Expressways

Apart from these there is also the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (135 kms with a 120km/hr speed limit) and the mini Noida - Greater Noida Expressway etc.

Just a little correction on the Purvanchal Expressway. The target completion date is sadly October 2021.

Re: Uttar Pradesh: The Land of Expressways

Update on the Ganga Expressway.

Land Survey For UP’s Longest Expressway begins.

Quote:
Six bidders have expressed interest in the expressway project. Two of these are foreign bidders — one from South Korea and the other from Malaysia. The report adds that the state government is planning to build the expressway on Public Private Partnership model.

In a meeting on 12 December, officials discussed the construction of the expressway under the Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer mode.

Reports say the state government plans to lay the foundation stone for the project in June 2021, just months ahead of the 2022 assembly elections.

Re: Uttar Pradesh: The Land of Expressways

The Delhi- Meerut Expressway has been opened for traffic from today, 01st April 2021. The long awaited Expressway will reduce the travel time between Meerut and Delhi to 45 minutes instead of over two and half hours taken currently.

The expressway connecting the two cities has become operational from today. In a tweet message, Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari said that the government has fullfilled its promise of reducing travel time between Delhi to Meerut by completing the work of the Expressway.

The 96 km-long 14-lane expressway will reduce travel time between Meerut and Delhi to 45 minutes. The expressway will also reduce the travel time of commuters from Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Haridwar and Dehradun to Delhi.

The expressway has been constructed with over 8 thousand crore rupees and will also help in resolving the problem of congestion and pollution.

Quite envious, that’s how it looks for someone sitting at Bangalore.

Piqued my curiosity to check which other states are having such extensive expressway plans.

Uttar Pradesh: The Land of Expressways-gangaexpressway1.jpg

The construction of the much-awaited Ganga Expressway, which will connect eastern and western parts of Uttar Pradesh, will commence in September 2021. The construction of the 1,020 Km-long expressway, which will be India's second-longest, is set to begin as the state government has acquired more than 80-90% of the land required for the project.

Re: Uttar Pradesh: The Land of Expressways

I really don't understand the idea behind building so many so called expressways and fixing the speed limit at 100 kmph. Ordinary 4 lane NHs down south pretty much have the same speeds usually and speed enforcement isn't that prominent.

I really doubt the volume of traffic is high to warrant such a network of expressways. It's not like those roads in UP have greater traffic than Chennai Bangalore routes or the Mysore - Bangalore route or your typical crowded highways in Kerala with high volume of vehicles. Ita just pure plain political favor.

Think of this, Chennai - Hyderabad doesn't even have a direct highway connecting both. Have to travel out of way to Vijayawada or take 2 lanes roads through Kadapa.

I thought all of these are UP state govt projects, since these are being developed by UPEIDA, not by NHAI.

Would agree on the low speed limits set for expressways, but C'mon!!!!

Please stop politicising even roads projects!!!

AFAIK, Tamil nadu had pretty much utilised the NHDP very well in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The Chennai-Bengaluru expressway would have started work if not for the protests. Not sure of the latest updates.

And regarding the crowded typical highways of Kerala. If leaders with vision had their way, the highways in Kerala would have been widened in the early 70s itself and Kerala would have got a pan-state expressway in the mid-2000s itself.

Thanks for letting me know! I was not aware of this. I searched up on this topic and was surprised to find the UP Govt had funded the development of the project. I am surprised the NHAI had minimum to nil contribution to the project.

Big infra projects generally have an element of politics in them. I do not want to go into it further as it was a bit unwarranted in this case however.

If implemented properly, it would serve as a big boost to UPs economy. One of the impoverished states of India and the biggest contributor to the Indian Parliament.

Re: Uttar Pradesh: The Land of Expressways

Major works on the Purvanchal expressway completed. To be opened in August '21.

Quote:
Providing a new route of travel between Lucknow and Ghazipur, Purvanchal Expressway is all set to strengthen road connectivity across the eastern regions of Uttar Pradesh. As per Avanish Awasthi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), 95% of the planned interventions have been materialised. Further, it is expected that the main carriageway would be made operational for the vehicles soon.

According to UPEIDA's Avanish Awasthi, it is anticipated that the expressway will be functional by the end of August. The officer has also examined and reviewed the works at the upcoming facility and asked officials to finish the remaining work as soon as possible. Orders have also been given to complete the river overbridges quickly so that the expressway can be commissioned soon.
