The move has sparked a debate on social media. While some seem to be in favour of it, others believe that more needs to be done and that merely ticketing drivers may not solve the problem.
Everything nowadays causes an uproar on social media. As if 24x7 useless news channels were not sufficient for the populace now they also want 24x7 useless interactive news via social media. Hope bots take up social media soon so that the media outlets stop creating articles referring to social media.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

Very cool. Same should be done for all offences. Karnataka hasn't hired traffic police in a few years. There are very few. They just need to pass on the baton: Catch offenders, and get them to catch more. High beam offenders need to watch bright light and watch more offenders, signal jumpers to catch more signal jumpers, people standing on zebra crossing to go and paint more zebra crossings, wrong parking offenders to lock more wrongly parked vehicles.
Offenders need education and be taught humility like the above video.

Bravo!

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

This is a novel punishment; I have dreamt of it for several years and so I'm all for it.

In the videos, you can see how the drivers themselves stand up as soon as they hear the first notes of their lovely horns. But they're all too happy to subject others to it.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been subjected to loud horns at traffic signals even though I was beside the vehicle and the drivers were honking at others in front of them without a care about pedestrians and other vehicles.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

First politicians and police vehicles need to undergo this kind of punishment, they blatantly use these loud horns for no reason. Then they should enforce the public, it's frustrating when people honk at stops knowing nothing much can be done.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

Going by the same logic will these policemen dare to make a politician ride their bikes through lunar surface of roads we see in our country or ask them to wade through streets overflowing with sewers or make them drink the polluted water... obviously they can't, this kangaroo justice targeting only the mid and lower strata of the society is not the right answer. Let these police folks look at their own backyard first.

The right answer is in implementing the law properly in a sustained fashion and avoid these social media stunts. Warn them, fine them, cancel their DL and RC, but meeting out inhuman treatment in the name of correction is not the solution.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

The dark side of me is pleasantly happy with this action by the cops.

I also fantasize this action with the riders of highly modded bullets/ old RX 135 with the loud silencers.
The cops should get them out of the bike. Tie them to the silencer with their ears facing the exhaust and turn on the throttle at full speed. The sound should be enough to make them deaf. Causing respiratory issues to these hooligans will be the icing on the cake.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

I don't agree to these stunts by public servants.
I would prefer the people who got punishment to go to court and put a defamation case against the cops for causing insult in front of public and mental agony. This is borderline taliban kind of behavior.

We are a democracy and there are laws for each offence. Cops should do their duty and follow the law prescribed instead of setting such examples.

Just imagine other scenarios of offences if cops going the route of 'taste of own medicine '.

Kudos to KA police...Bright headlights and extra lights on vehicles are a big problem in Tamil Nadu, especially with small LMV's like the Tata Ace. Drivers should be punished by making them stand in front of their vehicles with all the lights on for a few minutes.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

The cop deserves an award . These unruly drivers should punished just like this. Just keep on honking for no reason. But these drivers don't really bother about these punishments, do they?

I mean, just like look at that guy in the video! He has the courage to smile!

That will quickly sort out those who say honking is a "must" in cities!

You got company. College buses especially tend to flout all rules and drive around like GTA drivers on a road kill mission.

Always felt simple rules like the one you have proposed, or a daily "Honk Limit" - Like Cars get 7 honks, Buses 10 honks after which the horn is electronically disabled. Something along those lines are greatly improve the quality of driving experience roads.

I say this since, I sometimes tend to count the number of honks I make when driving around the city. I am really pleased with myself If I don't honk at all.

To share a personal story - Few years back a few Office collegues from Thailand had come to visit us in Chennai on Official trip. I had taken them out for lunch. One of them started recording a video and after sometime he was curious as to why I wasn't honking incessantly. When I was confused, he said he saw videos of drivers just going to town with their horns
And was expecting this to be the norm! Can't blame him, with all the hoking that was going on around at that time.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

Transgression! Plain and simple.

Why should a driver even listen to a cop for this? Imagine if it were you tomorrow where a power/fame hungry cop wants to make a point. It should be through a proper channel otherwise it's a gimmick and not going to make a difference anyways.

It's a reflection of how these cops think of themselves as lords of the road, their territory.

I recall an incident from my childhood (I was around 10 maybe).

Anti-reservation protests were in progress and an oil tanker passing was somehow forced to stop by the college students on the road (closet to the college) and that was causing a traffic jam.

Suddenly, a cop appeared and started slapping the driver left and right on his cheeks, in front of everyone. I felt very bad for the driver and it shook me looking at the plight and humiliation of the driver for no fault of his.

Such acts should never be justified. They are suitable only for banana republics where the state authority is loose and a semi-anarchy prevails. Not in a law abiding land we want this country to become, where citizens have full rights irrespective of their social status.

Agree to proper law implementation. However, enforcement has a long way to go for all such inhuman owners / drivers to become human.

Treating a now-inhuman with inhuman step is one way of conversion. it's just the Karma coming back to them.

Few years back I had seen similar video from China where Police were making drivers driving with bright light or high beam with in city were made to sit on a chair and stare at the bright light.

Hope this punishment will be improve things and also some strict action will be taken at a broader level.
Wow, never expected to see someone from JNNCE on Team BHP. I'm a final year engineering student here too.

This video was all over our WhatsApp groups in the past few days!! Never expected to see it here

See this so many times, whether I honk or not, the time taken between two points in Bangalore traffic is not going to change drastically. And since everyone has gotten used to honking, it doesn't even serve to alert people anymore.

Unfortunately, it has become the norm. People just honk out of reflex/habit. Empty road- honk in case someone just 'materializes' in front of you, jammed road- honk because miraculously it will clear up! And even on a (supposedly) better educated forum like this, people boast about their after-market horns.

Like superstition, changing something that has just become 'accepted', however illogical, is going to be tough.

But, I agree completely with this:

Better driver education, campaigns using local celebs that send the message that only bad drivers use the horn so much, stricter penalties for excessive honking, strict crack-down on after market horns, these are the ways to effect the change properly and within the law. Not whatever the cops (however much I sympathize with their tough jobs) decide on the spur of the moment.

True. It doesn't. It just plain good road etiquettes.

By that logic, even cleanliness ain't gonna affect the travel time. But we all want clean roads eh ?
