Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

A video has gone viral showing Karnataka Traffic Police punishing unruly drivers by making them hear their own noisy horns.

Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment-honk.jpg

The traffic police are stopping vehicles with loud horns and instructing drivers to listen to their own honking to make them experience the disturbance they create on the streets.

The move has sparked a debate on social media. While some seem to be in favour of it, others believe that more needs to be done and that merely ticketing drivers may not solve the problem.

Some have applauded the police’s action but think that a broader crackdown is required to eradicate the menace of unnecessary honking.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

This video is from home town Shimoga and yellow bus in the second video is JJNCE engineering college where I studied .

Few years back I had seen similar video from China where Police were making drivers driving with bright light or high beam with in city were made to sit on a chair and stare at the bright light.

Hope this punishment will be improve things and also some strict action will be taken at a broader level.

Somewhere in China, cops did something similar to people with harsh headlights. They were made to stare at it!

Now this, hope this exercise was done democratically and not just bus drivers.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

OMG! I've fantasized about this happening so many times!

Sitting ensconced in our cars, windows up, music playing, we don't realize how irritating honking is to pedestrians, people on 2-wheelers, and traffic cops on the road.

And in city traffic like Bangalore, honking is anyway pointless. Not even the 'for their safety' excuse makes any sense. Honking is either out of frustration or because the driver can't anticipate and is scared. Now it has just become a way of life. Honk, even if it doesn't make any difference!

But cops doing this is not good either. There are laws, can't just make up some random penalty like this. This can be used to justify slapping traffic offenders next!

What would be great is if honking somehow could be linked to a drop in fuel efficiency. If you use the horn x times in y minutes, or if you keep it pressed for x seconds continuously, you get a visible drop in mileage. With EVs, linking it to reduced range should be possible. That will quickly sort out those who say honking is a "must" in cities!

What an idea, sirji

Next up, owners as well as drivers of buses like these must be made to stand behind it and take deep, refreshing inhales!

We really need such dramatic lessons to spread the message across. Combined with fines, it'll bring some sanity to our city traffic.

Absolutely love it. There are idiots, who honk away to glory in the middle of the night in a residential/hospital zone without a care for the world. Unless they are made to listen to the sound they are creating AND fined for the same, this will not go away anytime soon.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

This honking menace is too bad these days. It has become hard to stay anywhere near busy roads or junctions. People have formed a bad habit of just using the horn for no reason at all. And pedestrians and road users have grown immune to the horn sound these days that a simple one second horn doesn't seem to make them get the point at all. There really needs to be something that has to be done to stop this habit (along with high beam usage & wrong-side driving)

while the action by cops is applaudable, govt. should have strict norms in controlling loud horns and bright head lights. Unless and until this is done, these problems cannot be controlled by few incidents.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

I'm sorry, instead of doing headline grabbing stunts like this they should properly implement existing laws and fine/confiscate vehicles with high decibel horns. And they have to do that consistently. Only fear of regular fines and related hassles will make us to reconsider loud horns. Also punishing the bus driver of a private college for the horn on his bus makes no sense as he is probably not the one who installed it.

And we have a separate thread for "Power horns". Hope we use horns responsibly just like everything else associated with driving.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

This is the treatment that needs to be given to drivers with loud horns and high beam flashers! Trust me, a taste of their own medicine is the only way they can be educated. If not then revoke their DL and confiscate their vehicles.

These white LED flashes, especially aftermarket ones are real bad. LEDs flash instantly in contrast to traditional halogens which actually aren't as instantaneous and thus giving no time for your eyes to adjust/ regulate the high lumens of LEDs hitting it.

Re: Karnataka: Drivers made to hear their own honking as punishment

This is a wonderful initiative. Kudos to the Karnataka Traffic Police for doing this. This needs to be replicated in more places, especially in Tier-2, 3, and 4 towns where these buses ply. Some of the buses have fancy horns which are absolutely shrill. Also, similar action needs to be taken against people driving with high beam on. They must be made to stare at their high beams until their eyes hurt.
