Mumbai Coastal Road: Interceptors deployed to curb supercar racing

The Mumbai police have deployed two Interceptor vehicles on the Mumbai Coastal Road after citizens complained about supercars racing down the 10 km stretch between Marine Drive and Worli.

According to reports, high-end supercars, including Ferraris and Lamborghinis have been spotted driving erratically on the coastal road on weekends. They not only violate speed restrictions but also cause a disturbance in designated silence zones around the Breach Candy Hospital. The interceptor vehicles will monitor traffic and enforce the speed limit, set at 80 km/h on straight sections and 60 km/h in tunnels.

Anil Kumbhare, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said, "Currently, the coastal road is not entirely covered by Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras. Once it is, we will be able to take immediate action against violators. Until then, these interceptor vehicles will help curb speeding on this stretch."

I always wonder how will automatic number plate take immediate action against the violates apart from issuing a challan. The violator continues to drive at breakneck speed for that race at least.

I have seen numerous vehicles ranging from kaali peeli to yellow plates to private plates using the bus only lane within the tunnel without batting an eyelid. Issuing challan might prevent this vehicle from doing so 3 months down the line but there will still be someone else doing it instead.

They should be able to stop the offenders while they are carrying out the offence IMO.

I drove on the Coastal Road both ways yesterday, did not see any Police interceptor cars. However, I saw a couple of cars being driven really fast and in the bus lane in the tunnel.

+1. Also what can be the maximum challan value ? 5K ? 10K ? Even if its a Lakh rupees in fine, will that matter to the super/hyper car owners who does this stunts on public road ? I don't think so.

At least, I will consider this as s small step in right direction. We need stricter rules and higher punishments for these offenders.

Actually the SMS notice will come instantly, at least here in Karnataka. Challan is issued in real time and you get the ping about 3-4 seconds after passing the camera at speed.

Of course regular offenders will use fake number plates or damaged number plates that cannot be read by the AI cameras.

Or we can get the flipping number plates aka James Bond style.

The AI challan system only targets law abiding citizens. Only when everyone is a law breaker and there is anarchy on the roads, will police come and physically start policing. As of now the revenue generated by the AI system is more than enough to keep the govt happy.

Re: Mumbai Coastal Road: Interceptors deployed to curb supercar racing

A quick Heads Up

I drove on the Coastal Road yesterday and observed that there are two Interceptor SUV's (Scorpio) positioned as follows:-

Northbound: After exiting the tunnel and passing the northbound interchange at Breach Candy

Southbound: Before the Breach Candy exit

Both vehicles had speed guns and the operator was watching all the cars. Wonder how many have been fined? Fortunately for me, I was on cruise control @ 80 mph.
