I used to sit in the co passenger seat and steer the car on the highways while my dad drives. I used park our car in our tight car park on my own. I guess that is why i still find it easy to park in tight spaces.
Underage by 1 yr, 5th std, Standard 20 van, mahindra jeeps, good old amby as old as me, got caught by a top cop while on a 'fill up the tank' run, ( cop knows car, and owner cudnt clearly see who was at the wheel ) Me, 7th std, driver 20 yrs. One of the best till date, he was a srilankan refugee, worked his *** off as a mech, did the govt exams and got through as a driver, THE BEST DRIVER I Have ever seen till date.. And a great mechanic, Ive seen him take out the engine when I was 14, I am blessed. There have been a few of my dads drivers who have been brainwashed into teachin me when i was kinda young, but 2 of them were good, the first one, always was about safety, slow speeds, the other was about speed. I am 37, I know i am nothin near the one who was about smooth speed and control. He is still the best I ve ever seen.

I used to steer the car during my kindergarten days sitting on my uncle/dads lap in our old amby.....Started actual driving on our premier padmini in 1990... Drove a maruti van for 5 yrs... then esteem for another 5 yrs... Then the baleno for 5 Yrs and currently an octy for almost 4 years....

Got license in kerala soon after crossing the legal age limit.
Officially I learned driving after coming to Dubai. Joined a driving school and cleared the test on first attempt, on the 22nd day after joining the course.
My instructor was one Mr. Joshi from Delhi; liked his way of "instruction". He told me what to expect in the driving test, and rest is history.

There was no option for 12 or for 13, so i chose 15-20.
Look at the posts above and all of them were below the legal age limit when they learned driving. Now why the hell do you complain and create a thread in the street experiences section when you see a small kid sitting in his father's lap holding the steering wheel?

Noble words. We respect and salute them.
But still, a few thoughts to clear the air…
India cannot tolerate in 2010
what India could, 43 years ago in 1966.
It was a different India back then.
There is no comparison with the hoary past.
I know I am unashamedly covering up for my misdemeanors as a kid,
but hey, there was barely any enforcement in rural India back in 1966.
We have passed through times when the law was not enforced anywhere as well
as it is today (that the law even today, doesn't hold a shadowy candle
to how the developed world enforces it, is a different matter),
when there was no RTI (right to information Act),
when news reporting is not as rigorous as it is today.
when there was no computing for the common man,
no telephone in every hand,
no cellular nor wired networks,
no social websites,
no satellite TV,
no hijackings, no terrorism,
no match fixing,
highly aware discrimination between the four castes (वर्ण s) and rampant untouchability, dowry burnings with scarcely even a protest, starvation deaths, ...
no proper education of driving techniques,
no proper examining of driving techniques before issuing a license
-- in this regard, I can say that some friends north of the Vindhyas
can still obtain a "valid" license without even a perfunctory test.
Speaking for myself, I learned to drive,
when I was on vacation as an underaged individual
-- a school boy, 43 years ago in an obscure rural district town
in Central India. I suspect that many "drivers" back there
drive without proper licenses, even in the present day.
Today India is increasingly heavily motorized,
teetering on unmanageability -- there are divided roads, more rules, more enforcement, traffic signals, 100 km/h expressways, hell of a lot more motor vehicles, the common man contributes to a sprawling deluge of vehicles -- you don't have to be rich to afford a little 4-seat one-litre ripper.
And you cannot dream of condoning in metropolitan India in 2010,
what you could 43 years ago in rural India in 1966.
It was a different India back then.
Enforcement of the law is much more of the
life-and-death mission-critical nature
in the crowded suburbia we dwell in.
No more is there any place left for an underage,
to experiment with driving a motor vehicle
-- there is just no comparison with the past.

On the 1st day i was very excited as i would be the 1st time i would we driving a car but my exitement turned to dissapointment as the 1st day we just sat in the car and Raja just gave me some lessons in basics.
I remember him telling me why driving in the reverse gear consumes more fuel than the others .He asked me how much food do i eat,i said so and so quantity,then he asked how much does my father or elder brother eat and i replied much more than i do.He asks me why is it so? I reply cause they are bigger than i was and hence needed more food to which Raja says that's why the reverse gear takes in more fuel than others cause it's bigger than the rest.I don't know whether this true or not, but it's just something i don't think i am going to forget easily :).

Learnt very early, infact I am told I was holding the steering wheel by the age I could hardly even stand up. Tutor was my dad's official driver. Learnt to drive a tractor around class 6th though scooter was officially taught to me by my dad in class 8th. Started driving a Mazda double cabin truck on the farm where my dad was posted in Class 10th and by the time I reached college was regularly driving dad's jeep and an occasional Tata 1210 that used to come to the Factory Complex where we resided.
Never actually learnt just got on and started driving.
I learnt in my 68 model Amby,which was having the old type hand gear and big steering which will have a ring type inside the steering wheel which is used for horn.
It was great to learn driving in an Ambassador.
From then I suggest my friends , relatives to learn driving in Amby.
There is a lot of difference in learning in a latest vehicle and learning in AMBY.
