I think he said "under developed parts of the city" and being in Chennai, you should know which parts of Chennai, right SB ? Hmmm, I can name a few, but then you would also know them before me.

Many schools have a government declared holiday today. This cut my travel time to office by 50% !

Big deal buddy!
A holiday only gives some an opportunity to showcase their latent grand-prix skills on the city roads. Makes me all the more wary and alert.

I guess you 'missed' the fact that it,s precisely what I had done in the first place by quoting him. If I knew which places he was referring to, there would be no point in asking, I would think.

Biju .. I could start off by saying..areas around omr..ecr..velachery..etc but don't want to start a controversy here.

As it is, this thread has more negative rants and I do not want that to increase.

Is it to protest against the RTO crack down on the vehicles or rains? well if I remember, the transport association have withdrawn their strike since tuesday and things are back to normal i believe. Read in The Hindu that another kid was killed by his school van. Though this was also partly a mistake from parents who took him to hospital first.

The Hindu : Cities / Chennai : School van kills yet another child

Under developed? or Over crowded? I would say T.Nagar is the worst place to drive. Unnecessary flyovers, illegal parkings, encroachments. Can write a list for three to four pages.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Took me over 3 hours to go to Guindy from Thuraipakkam yesterday. The pallikarnai toll road was blocked due to some "electrical" pole falling or something. This was what I could gather from the auto guy.

No one to give any clear directions on that road and it became such a mess!!! Does anyone know what actually happened? Was it due to the rain?

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

^^^Rains did play a role in the traffic-havoc seen on OMR yesterday evening - it was a crowded mess from 6PM or so.
When I left work at 9:30PM, OMR was clear, but the Kamakshi hospital junction was a mess. Not because of lots of vehicles, but because all the bikers
had parked themselves under the flyover, bang in the middle of the road blocking traffic from all four sides, to avoid getting wet in the rain.

I had merely escaped from yesterday traffic Jam at Thorippakkam. I have taken Guindy-Velachery-SRP Tools-thiruvanmiyur- food Village. My Wife had suggested this route and took only 30 mts to reach at 5.30pm start from Guindy.

No, it's because of Krishna's birthday!

But, I think it was yesterday that I read that school van drivers/owners had struck in protest at the imposition of safety regulations. I find this as disgusting as the deaths themselves

I went out, with wife, by auto for the morning. It's safer for the whole world if I don't drive myself early in the morning. It's also a pleasure to be able to just watch the world instead of the traffic.

Well said about watching the chaos than being a part of it. On the other hand, I pity the van people, because, sensing the opportunity to earn krishna jayanthi bonus, I am sure our RTO and CCTP are milking these vehicles as per their family needs. If their children want a big TV, stop the buses, raid the schools, transport companies and if the kids want just some sweets, then threaten the van drivers en route and milk some bucks out. This obviously forces them to go the strike way.

OT: Sorry Mr. Krishna! Since I am not getting to eat "Sheedai" in Germany - (a recipe done for krishnajayanthi) I forgot your b'day - You don't give me chocolate, I dont wish you on your b'day. Fair enough isnt it!

It has never ever rained when holidays were declared on account of expected rains only to us kids' pleasure. (during my childhood days, Please dont miscalculate my age, those childhood days were not so long ago!)
