Lovely bikes there Yogi. And the VFR is to me the gem of your collection. The V4s are not a simple lot to work on, and the later gen Vtec ones are generally neglected and the valves are never done because of the complicated procedure.

Speaking of valves, on the IL4s do owners stick to the factory recommended check interval or is this mostly done only when a need is felt?

Thanks mate, yes the V4s are complicated machines but a pleasure to ride. Mine is a 5th Generation non Vtec gear driven cams model.

Well to be frank its done only if the need is felt or after the damage is done. Mostly after the damage is done and the problems start showing up.

Indeed. One of these days perhaps I will do it in my bike. The only thing that is daunting to me is to open the entire thing twice. Once to measure the clearance, then to open again once the correct shims are procured.

Get a full shim kit and save the trouble of doing it over? I think they cost 7.5k for the set if i am not mistaken from the us.

I did consider that. But it's is still not most efficient way for someone who wants to do just one bike.

There are many of these shim manufacturers in Rajkot but I have no idea about quality. Also these are mostly export units so for someone who needs a couple could be difficult finding the way.

Another option is grinding the existing shims. This can be done on a piece of fine sandpaper by hand and I also understand there are shim grinding machines to do this job. However some people are of the opinion that this compromises the integrity since shims are heat treated. I am not totally sure of that part though.

Me and my dad are working on our Pajero 4M40 engine and the valve look a bit tight. The Japnese IL4s almost always have the same bucket and shim configuration hence my thoughts wandered in these directions.

Just another note on my earlier post.

I went to a engine shop today because I wanted to discuss my Pajero valve shims. The machinist told me he can easily resize the shims and in fact this is standard procedure. While using resized shims some folks put the ground surface facing away from the valve stem, that's all. He said there is no detriment to the life of shims if properly resized.

I think in the west people prefer to buy these shims because it's a cheaper alternative, given labor is much more expensive.

re: My Garage: Suzuki Bandit GSF1250 & Kawasaki Ninja 1000 Z1000SX

Back with some updates on the Bandit and CBR.
Cleaned bandits headers with harpic and the results were awesome as you all can see in the pics.
CBR was due for an overall service , got that done and got the rims powdered coated and changed the valve stems to 90 degree stems.

Here are few pics for your viewing.

Well the sad news is I am facing big time parking issues in my Society where I am staying and couple of Envy and A$$ Burnt people have started harassing us for occupying more than 2 parking slots even when there is plenty of space available to park. In the view of that CBR and Bandit are parking inside and the Scooty moves out and the VFR has been parked at the mechanics place for selling it off. Will have to part it out as soon as any buyer comes. Lets see how it works out.

Looks awesome with the hearers cleaned. Some inspiration for me too to get to the headers one day. I had cleaned my exhaust with Harpic and the results were very good. Or maybe I think just remove the header, get it blasted and then paint with heat resistant paint.

Well. The VFR found a new home. CBR as well found a new home. And I myself found a new home with ample parking space.
2014 NINJA 1000 cane home last weekend.

Congrats! What prompted this switch, just a desire to have something new (boredom)?

Thought of sharing some pics of the Ninja.
Have been collecting accessories for the Ninja since last 1 months, most of them have been delivered and once I am back home will start loading them on the bike.
Right side fork tube of the Ninja is pitted and needs replacement, new tube has already come and waiting for installation.
Chain sprockets are gone, have got the new ones.

If you don't mind sharing on the forum. How much does a 2014 Ninja 1000 go for today?
