Tiger 800 XRx - INR 13.13 L
Tiger 800 XCx - INR 13.76 L
I feel the AT positioning is more in line with the incoming 900 Rally Pro (which replaces the outgoing Tiger 800 XCa) and also, excluding the 1200 Explorer in this. The AT vs 800 XR/x (road biased) comparisons never made sense to me considering the AT was priced higher than them anyway and offered different 'set' of features and ride components.

re: 2020 Triumph Tiger 900. EDIT: Launched

Managed to get a test ride of the new Tiger 900. Unfortunately, the road oriented GT was not available, only the Rally Pro.

2020 Triumph Tiger 900. EDIT: Launched-whatsapp-image-20200509-13.11.44-1.jpeg

I like the new looks, still quite a big motorcycle, coming from the Street Triple. My first concern was the seat height, but was able to manage with tip toes, just about. Gradually, the confidence increased, but initial impression was it's tall, but off the stand was surprisingly nimble, very well balanced. Clutch is very light and easy to manipulate.Out on the road, first thing to get used to was the different seating position, and the wider handle bars. While in the Street Triple, I have a more front leaning position and it encourages you to carry more speed into the corner, the Tiger is the exact opposite, laid back position means you take the turn fairly slowly and in a relaxed manner. Wind buffeting was there, even with the screen. Throttle and engine response, my observation was that it is still sluggish, but builds up speed steadily. Engine vibrations are present, but nothing annoying, exhaust note is nothing to talk about.

2020 Triumph Tiger 900. EDIT: Launched-whatsapp-image-20200509-13.11.44-3.jpeg

Huge display screen is very easy to read and loads of settings, none of which I tried out. In general, suspension was stiff enough for normal road riding, without being too wallowy, off road perfomance is something to be explored for another day. At no point did the engine heat make itself evident but also, I was not stuck in traffic for long.

Not only does it NOT sound anything like the Triple before, I think even the refinement and smoothness is lost. Sure the bottom end grunt has maybe improved, due to the new firing order but I missed the Triple sound track, no intake roar and the 'sewing' machine sound. Also, the engine is more vibey than before, I think. What is Triumph doing?

re: 2020 Triumph Tiger 900. EDIT: Launched

As per Overdrive, Tiger 900 Rally Pro will most likely be priced between Rs 15.75 - 16.25 lakhs.

Quote:
Shoeb Farooq, General Manager, Triumph Motorcycles India, confirmed to OD that the Tiger 900 Rally Pro will be the first model in the Tiger 900 range to be launched in India, which is scheduled to arrive later this month or by mid-June 2020.
Quote:
Coming to the pricing of the Triumph Tiger 900, internationally the prices have been increased in the range of 4 percent to 7 percent, compared to the Tiger 800, and the same will be seen in India as well, confirmed Shoeb. The Tiger 800 XCa, the top of the line model in the outgoing Tiger range, is priced at Rs 15,16,700. If the international hike is anything to go by, we expect the Tiger 900 Rally Pro to be priced between Rs 15.75 lakh to Rs 16.25 lakh (ex-showroom).

Finally, it's here. I'm told early June launch and that enquiries and pre-bookings have started at few dealers.

Triumph were losing out to the premium twins due to lack of low torque for off-road and softroad situations. I think they decided it was best to trade the aural and refined character of their Triple engine to retune the performance band.

How this plays out, only time will tell

The 'sewing' machine sound was a trademark of the pre-2018 era Tigers. The 2018-2019 ones came with a more free flowing, shorter and lighter exhaust - which has a constant growl (very soothing to my ears and also hard to articulate through words) at lower revs and a slightly muted snarl when cruising in top speed. The 'sewing' sound is missing. Though the aftermarket Arrows on the pre 2018 machines sound much much better than the newer ones.

With the 900, almost all reviews and videos talk about the 'paradigm shift' in engine and acoustics. As imp! mentioned - only time knows the answer!

re: 2020 Triumph Tiger 900. EDIT: Launched

BMW Motorrad has really thrown a cat amongst the pigeons today with the launch of the F900XR at 10.5 lakhs. The Pro version costs 11.5 lakhs!

And Triumph is sitting high up there, with even the Street Triple RS itself costing 11.13 lakhs! India will most likely not get the GT Pro version, with the rumour being that Rally Pro will come first - followed by Rally and GT versions.

Wonder how competitive Triumph can get with the GT to the 10.5L pricing of the F900XR?

A big challenge for Triumph with the surprising pricing from BMW. I got a call today from Triumph, Bangalore asking if I would be interested in pre-booking the new Tiger 900 (I visited them in Feb to check the Tiger and didn't proceed as the discount wasn't great).

The caller didn't have much idea on the price and speculated it could be between 14 and 16 ex. showroom. They will be launching four variants (GT, GT Pro, Rally & Rally Pro). I think F900 XR will be the preferred choice over Tiger GT unless Triumph comes with more aggressive pricing.

I dont think Triumph can even come close to the F900XR pricing for its road oriented version. A better bet would be to concentrated on the Rally variants and go head-on against the Africa Twin by undercutting it on price.

re: 2020 Triumph Tiger 900. EDIT: Launched

Can't wait to test ride the 900 road version just to see how it compares with my MY 2018 800. Hopefully TDs should start by June end / July.

Personally of course, I am more than happy with my 800. If I had money to throw in a covid / post-covid world, I'd definitely add a different bike to my garage, not upgrade the same model.

re: 2020 Triumph Tiger 900. EDIT: Launched

Don’t know if others feel this way
But don’t you think the Tiger has become more of a cat in the new version.... the older 800 had an imposing stance about it with those slit headlights.this at least in pictures looks way more timid.
