Yamaha plans to introduce the R7 and MT07 models in India before the end of 2022.
According to a media report, the bike maker plans to import both bikes in small numbers via the CBU route. Yamaha is also looking to avoid the OBD-2 regulations by bringing the bikes in this year.
It is said that the launch of the R7 and MT07 may be pushed to 2024, if Yamaha is unable to import them by the end of this year. Both bikes are powered by a 689cc parallel-twin engine that puts out 72 BHP and 67 Nm.
It has also been reported that Yamaha intends to bring the MT-09 to India, but may rule out the Tenere 700.

If there is one vehicle that is tailor made for India, it is the Tenere 700, and the think tank in Yamaha kept that one vehicle out of India...wow!!

It seems the Tenere is being ruled out as Yamaha is facing supply issues. The Tenere is manufactured in France, and France has a shortage of supplies. R7 and MT-07 are directly imported from Japan.
I wish Yamaha considers R3 as well.
And I hope with this Yamaha India comes back stronger improving the post sales support for spares and parts for its existing owners as well!
The R7 just might sell since the love for faired bikes stays intact though the 72-73bhp of power just doesn't live up to the R-moniker. Most people who assume that R7 is an upgrade over the R6 will walk away mighty disappointed to find it is in fact a big downgrade.
The MT-07 will just get ignored - it just doesn't look like a bigger sibling of the MT-15 with that new face.
But wonder why Yamaha didn't consider the Tracer or XSR range if Tenere was an issue. All of them use the same 689cc / 73bhp parallel twin engine. The sport touring & neo-retro bikes seem to be finding favor these days.
Instead of the 07s, I'm hoping most of the -09 range gets launched here ie; MT09, MT09 SP, Tracer 9 GT. Maybe even the rumoured faired -R9
The MT09s have been priced incredibly well overseas and represent great value for the performance they offer. But i guess if Yamaha bring it here, it wont have the same pricing strategy.
All this is a big IF. All the decision makers in Yamaha India will keep relating to the fact that the last time they tried selling the previous-gen MT09 here, it wasn't exactly a sales success. "Won't succeed", "Market is too small" etc etc.
Something tells me these bikes may not sell as expected simply because both of them aren't special enough for many to invest the hight asking price.
Back in 2019~2020 when ktm brought 100 units of 790 duke even ktm struggled to sell them.

Rightly said.
Yamaha trying to sell MT09 was a futile effort as they had zero 'strategy' in place. Back in 2019 when I approached the largest Yamaha dealer in Mumbai for an MT09, they gave a pricing that was above Z900, ST765RS, F900R. On asking the price breakup he quoted a simple math of landing price + import duties. Which basically, any private importer too can offer.
When it comes to Scrambler, Z900 n few other bikes the pricing is good due to the Thai mfg and import technique.
Unless Yamaha is producing the bikes in Thailand or importing as CKD/SKD units, expect a repelling price-tag, as nobody is gonna pay an exorbitant amount for a twin-cyl engine when a 4-cyl beast is priced way lucratively.
A few thoughts on the launch of the R7 and MT07
- Yamaha is like the school topper who ended up becoming the guy who barely passes his engineering examinations. What a fall from grace. They were synonymous with performance motorbikes in 3 generations (RD350 - RX100 / RX135 - R15). 14 years after they launched the R15, it is their biggest displacement motorcycle on sale in India. Meanwhile, the R1, MT01, MT09 and R3 were discontinued are now long forgotten. No, Yamaha!
- Little birdies told me that Yamaha's push for the Blue Square showrooms was to bring in middleweight big bikes. The Tenere 700 was the name being whispered excitedly.
- MBK Industrie, a fully-owned Yamaha subsidiary in France, manufactures the XSR 700, Tracer 700 and Tenere 700. Given the supply issues there, those bikes are out of contention. The US model of the Tracer 700 is made in Japan but Im not sure if that is Euro 5.
- When Yamaha brought the MT09 in the past, they did it with a flawed sales strategy. There werent any test ride bikes while its competitors all offered test rides. Who was going to plonk down so much money, on a product that was new to India, without a test ride? If Yamaha wants to do things right, they have to keep aside at least one or two test ride bikes of each model, which can be rotated between their dealerships. That is the only way that they can succeed.
- I suspect that they will be priced above the Kawasaki twins but below the inline 4 bikes. There will be takers for the R7. The MT07 might have a tough time getting off showroom floors, which will be a shame, considering that it is supposed to be a gem of a bike.
- To me, the R7 is the spiritual successor of the Daytona 675 in India. Yes, its down on power (by a massive 50%!) but you get sporty ergonomics, adjustable suspension, a very usable engine, stellar looks (gotta get those Insta likes, yo!) and a lot more. Who else offers that below Rs 10 L, besides the Apache 310RR BTO?
- If Yamaha gets cocky with their pricing, then they will have to do a price drop (a la Honda with their CB500X correction) to clear their inventory. That would probably be a great time to pick up a black R7 for my garage!
Yamaha YZF R7 and MT 09 might be launched in India soon.
The company has discreetly teased both the bikes in its latest ‘The Call of the Blue’ campaign TVC.

Tenere 700 would have been the ultimate launch but these are not bad either. With folks launching Activa with new sticker for eternity, this is a welcome change!
Hmm. Interesting.
Pretty excited about the MT09. The 2021-onwards model's face is weird-ish, but as long as you are riding it, it shouldnt matter, because apparently the rest of the package is great (as per international reports).
In the US, the MT09 retails at about USD 9400 which is about $200 more than the Z900. No way they can arrive at that sorta of pricing in India - CBU from Japan etc.

Yeah that link is still live. But it cant be accessed from the Homepage. This is also the previous gen (somehow looks better compared to current model). But the Price makes it obvious. No chance Yamaha are gonna launch it now at this price.:sadface
