Yamaha big bikes showcased in India: R3, R7, MT-07, MT-09

Yamaha recently showcased its big bike range in India during a dealer meet. On display were models like the Yamaha R3, R7, R1M, MT-03, MT-07 and MT-09.

Reports suggest that Yamaha could introduce these models in India in the coming months. Most likely, these will be imported as completely built units (CBUs).

It seems the Yamaha R3 will be making a comeback this year to take on the KTM RC 390 and the Kawasaki Ninja 400. The bike is powered by a 321cc, liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine that makes 42 BHP and 29.5 Nm. The MT-03 is a naked version of the R3, which will compete with the KTM Duke 390.

The Yamaha R7 is a mid-capacity sports bike powered by a 689cc parallel-twin engine producing 72 BHP and 63 Nm. It will compete with the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Honda CBR650R. The MT-07 is the naked version of the R7.

The Yamaha R1M is the brand's flagship superbike featuring a 998cc inline 4-cylinder engine that out 197 BHP. On the other hand, the MT-09 uses an 890cc, inline 3-cylinder engine that makes 115 BHP and 93 Nm.

Any speculative cost for the MT07? And how is Yamaha's reputation wrt after sales service and cost for their superbikes? It's not Honda (or Suzuki for that matter) bulletproof level of reliability/durability. But a Japanese bike nonetheless.

Good to see Yamaha bringing in their bigger bikes. They had no bike above 250cc since BS6 norms came into effect. The MT-03 seems very interesting to me, it's the first time it will be launched here, and will be the only twin cylinder naked bike when it comes.
Buyers looking for the RE 650s, duke 390, Ninja 400 or the CB300R could cross-shop and have it as an option.

Globally MT03 is well received but was not launched in India. If it comes to India then will be a competitive option subject to reasonably priced.

Yamaha MT-03 will be good for both urban commuting and weekend fun rides. It is expected to cost around 3 lakhs and most likely will be launched in June.

150cc MT15 gets USD forks and 700cc MT07 misses out on them. Beyond me!

Re: Yamaha big bikes showcased in India: R3, R7, MT-07, MT-09

This is definitely a step in the right direction but from the limited view point I have as a Mumbai resident, they have some deep work to do on multiple fronts in order to inspire customer confidence - the biggest part of that being a customer centric dealership experience that is consistent with the target customers they are trying to attract with their premium and CBU offerings.

Yamaha dealers have for too long been volume scooter dealers (and even there they don’t have the market leading products) counting pennies when it comes to sales. I still recall when Kamala Yamaha used to even stock bikes like the V Max etc. Today it looks like a shadow of its former self. I had once asked them about the Aerox and the chap couldn’t even be bothered to speak to me for 2 mins. I believe its now that a few Blue Square dealerships are slowly popping up with one in Chembur that I saw off hand - I’m sure there are more.

The premium bike market has several players today with multiple offerings who really go the whole hog in providing customers a reasonably high quality dealership experience - be it Triumph, BMW, Kawasaki, Hero (Harley) or even Honda.

It takes a lot to convert prospectives into sales and retain those customers via high quality service. Getting a few CBUs for a bit isn’t going to be the end all of its resurgence in India in this space. There also seem to be a lot of dissonance between Yamaha India and dealers (just my perception of things). Hopefully there are concrete plans on all fronts to set this right.

Personally I am sceptical at this point. The fact that despite all the engagement with early adopters of the Aerox and acknowledging suspension issues, Yamaha did not address this in its much touted update earlier this week is not a positive sign. Even if I was smitten by an expensive Yamaha superbike today, I’d review their overall ecosystem carefully before plonking any serious money their way.

Yamaha has never got their pricing right for India, for whatever reasons.

They also need to bring in models like the Tenere for them to do well here

For the Indian market faired bikes are far more popular than naked bikes. Consider R15 vs Mt15 or at a higher price point Ninja 650 vs Z650.

The problem with a CBU MT03 is the Duke 390 which is great naked bike in its segment.

If Yamaha can nail the R3 price it should sell well as the Ninja 300 is badly outdated and the Rc390 has lost some if it's sharp looks and handling

Oh well, will be interesting to see how the price the R7 and MT07. Anything like the Honda 650s and it’s going to see super limited numbers.

So from what I have read the Tenere 700 is mostly made in France and Yamaha is struggling a bit to handle the sheer volume of sales so they are not launching the bike in other markets for the time being.

The other bikes I believe will be launched as pure CBU so expect uncompetitive prices. AFAIK these bikes don't conform to the new OBD 2 emission norms which means they will sell only few units to ensure they are sold off before the OBD 2 norms kick off in India for bikes. The OBD 2 norms for cars is already in effect but for bikes it's deffered for the time being.

Any idea when OBD 2 norms will kick in for bikes? Will it also apply to CBUs when it does?

The Tenere and Tuareg both are bikes that I’d love to see in India but alas, little hope on either front for the foreseeable future.

From what I read, the French-made Tenere are for sale in Africa (and presumably Europe) while for the rest of the world, it’s manufactured in Japan.

https://yamaha.cica-motors-liberia.c...e%20in%20Japan.

‘ The Ténéré 700 was created by Yamaha’s European department and its design team in Italy, which also has a lot of experience in development and experience in rally racing. For sale in Africa, the Ténéré 700 is manufactured in France, while for US, and other global customers it will be made in Japan.’

https://dirtbikemagazine.com/yamaha-tenere-700/

‘… There are, of course, some other inexpensive ADV bikes. They are, without exception, outsourced budget bikes from Vietnam, China and India. The Tenere 700 isn’t one of those. It’s made in Yamaha’s factory in Japan. There’s nothing else quite like it. The motor is based on the one in the MT07..’

Although yeah, it would probably still be obnoxiously expensive as a CBU from Japan. Although I doubt it’d much more than the R7 considering the price diff between them is just a few hundred.

I made a mistake. What was deferred for two years was an additional sensor which would have provided real time monitoring of the emissions on the dash.

http://www.journeyline.in/newsdet.aspx?q=248608

So OBD 2 norms for bikes is active but only part compliance as of today. The Hayabusa 2023 launched yesterday as OBD 2 compliant so I guess even CBU bikes have to follow OBD 2 norms

Why don't they bring Tracer 9GT from Thailand if they can't bring the Tenere?
