Your requirements are contradicting and hence it has to be a heart decision when it comes to chose between resale after 5 years vs DPF headache during regular use. Both Petrol and Diesel options has their own pros and cons and I believe you are better judge of what you want more! You will find various opinions since there is no clear winner on paper.

I'd love to but it looks like it hasn't been even one year since the launch of thar RWD thus they are not in the used car market (at least not in my state).

No, RWD diesel comes with manual transmission only.

It has barely been 1 year since the launch of Petrol AT RWD. They are virtually impossible to be found in used market.

Go for Diesel, hands down! Mahindra has pioneered in terms of their NVH their diesels produce. It doesn't feel like a diesel at all and you'll never regret buying one because it'll also be relatively easier on your pocket w.r.t maintenance / refuels.

One bit from my side, don't go in for a purchase thinking you'll end up selling it. Enjoy the experience of buying, driving and owning a car that's when you'll LIVE it! Hope you're not in dual minds to buy one?

If you are worried on the depreciation hit, I'd suggest go for preowned Thar as I'm sure there's quite a few already. But also restricts on the preference you'll have!

One more thing making me lean towards diesel is the inherent EGR to inlet valve fouling in GDI petrol engines given that fuel injection is direct and not through the inlet valve. Traditionally I believe that the fuel has detergents that clean the inlet valves. Since the fuel is no longer cleaning the valves, junk (along with oil blowby from the exhaust via the EGR) builds up and the high Temps in the engine bake this gung which will lead to eventual seal issues for the inlet valve.

I think many of us have said the same. Considering your relatively light usage, buy the Petrol. It is a Real Joy.

I have just returned from a 3 days road trip up to the Nilgiris and back. Drove around 700kms up and down. And the ‘whoosh’ of that superbly responsive 2 litre turbo engine and the sheer unbridled toughness of the vehicle on the plains, in the hills, on tarmac and on broken surfaces and on dirt roads, is unparalleled.

It is a very solid vehicle and inspires huge confidence to take on all sorts of terrain with aplomb. The Thar is really like a permanent effervescent adrenaline rush.

Mine is just about hitting the age of 3 and has crossed 29000kms. And as I keep saying, even though I have been thinking of selling and going EV and all, I still haven't got that ‘Thar-Love’ out of my system.

A quick question: During this Nilgiri trip, especially when you’ve covered plains and hills as well, how many times did you have to engage 4x4 and did you feel an RWD too would cut equally?
