Ride to Spiti / Kinnaur in March 2016. Anyone game?

Folks,

Good morning. This is nothing but a repeat of http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...ar-2012-a.html

Except I am currently riding solo without even the missus for company. The P180 is replaced by a shiny new CBR, so things will be quicker this time around. Of course, if there is some work related crap which comes up at the last moment, I may have to make it a three day kinnaur ride, but there's like 1% chance for that. While I'm going to be on my bike - I'm game for co-adventurers on 2 /4 / 10 / 18 / 32 wheel!

There is no plan except to get to Spiti and ride as far as I can. Or explore the himalayas if the route is closed. We'll make something up but it'll be one hell of a trip with many snowy vistas - that much I will ensure

The plan is for a mostly boringly hectic ride-ride with a fairly disciplined riding day that starts at 5/6am and least possible breaks (Target: Peo / Jeori on day 1). This is not a count-the-butterflies or shutterbugs' ride. This is how truckers do it - start early and keep away at it at a reasonable speed - no rash riding.

Don't get me wrong - I like to sightsee leisurely and do bakar as much as the next person , but on my limited schedule I want to cover as much ground as possible, and see as many places - but I won't be stopping every 20 minutes to take a photo or a chai/sutta break!

Show of hands? Drop me a line in case anyone's interested.

For a moment I thought you are going to be a driver / cleaner in one on the trucks that do arduous duty in that region.

tempting but not ridden for a long time 8-(

Good title no? Atleast it got attention. But its a fact - its not a ride for regular travelers or tourists. It needs the discipline of a trucker.

Drive down sirjee. It will be fun

For others -http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travelogues/148586-winter-trip-spiti-fortuner-thar.html is the vistas I wish to witness! (but with a little less snow!)

Just to update everyone - I will most likely depart Delhi in the second half of 23rd March owing to work constraints. That would imply stopping at Day 1 close to Solan or Kandaghat!

If anyone is planning a drive that side, talk to me.

I hope you have seen the upcoming weather forecasts. We have been experiencing pretty heavy rains and cold weather in Himachal right now. The weather is supposed to open up after 21st but I would take such predictions with a spoon full of salt.

rdst_1 mate, please update us with the weather conditions on that side from time to time (until the 25th). Thanks!

There's a great probability I will be riding in those areas during next weekend. Planning to keep it an overnighter. 800 kms in two days.

I don't live near Spiti/Kinnaur. I live near Palampur. However the weather has been rough all week long even over here, hence my remark. I have a few friends from Kotgarh and they experienced lots of snowfall this week. Everyone was expecting to Rohtang to open up earlier this year but that doesn't seem to be the case any longer considering the late snow and rain we got. Today's the first day in the last week that we were spared by the rain gods so hopefully the predictions of normal weather resuming after 21st come to be true for both your sake and mine.

Hi,

Is there any official / volunteer website that posts road updates? e.g If I can learn tonight itself (before I start) that say the Spiti route is closed due to a landslide (true story, 4 years back), then I will go to chanshal side, or maybe chitkul or something else towards sach / dalhousie - but I will not even proceed on the Spiti route if it is closed.

Would really appreciate your guidance here! Thanks.

The trip is finally done but is definitely not recommended on this schedule, in this season and on a CBR250. I've now come down with carpal tunnel syndrome like symptoms as a result of the beatings my palms took, so the triplog may take a few weeks to be put up.
