3. Last monday, after a stop and go, started to hear a "Krrrrrrr" noise from the engine. The noise starts once the key is at the on position and even after cranking, does not go off. (This one is a little worrisome). Currently out of country and will go to the ASS once back.

Tried to find out the origination of the sound and is coming from the right side of the engine. Anyone, any suggestions.Thx...

This Noise in the engine may be due to a component called Vaccum modulator. If it is, then it is just a small replacement. Had happened to Scorp. May be you can find my post regarding that here.

These thuds and thaks were NOT at even intervals or periodicity.

I would agree to SST's views, possible that engine could be misfiring. If you tanked up last time from a "not so known" source, then misfiring can be the most likely cause.

The kind of noise description you gave, also resembles to the noise associated with engine knocking. If the noise does not repeat, nothing to worry of.

PS- I am assuming the noise was exactly from the engine and not from the engine bay area.

Quoting HVKs post from another thread,

I had a similar problem in my Scorpio - old fuel feed pipe not able to pump in adequate fuel, causing power loss when the engine was revved fully. if fuel lines are choked, it would restrict supply at all times and duration of run may not matter significantly.
Can this be a reason for the low power issue on my CRDe I mentioned in my earlier post(previous page)?

From my earlier post,

Quote:

Issue is, when I slow down on inclines, the car doesn't pull off in 2nd gear as it used to and needs a shift to 1st. Before this I never had to use 1st. Vehicle easily touches 130(I did not try beyond that).
The issue may be there in all gears and all speeds, I specifically mentioned 2nd gear because this is the gear we usually use when we slow down and the the effect is most felt in 2nd.

I am sorry for the last post, was in hurry for a party:D, wrote something which might have caused confusion.

The noise resembles misfiring and not knocking as I wrote earlier.

Took it to the service station on Monday. The ASS assured that the power window motors will be replaced if it reoccurs again.

Hi Sharath, you were right. The vaccum modulator had failed and was replaced under warranty.

Completed the 2nd free service and gear oil was replaced.
Gear Oil - 630.00
Consumables - 150.00 (Grease)
They had not even greased my door hinges and charge me for the very use of the same. Very bad.

Overall OK with the service done but was not with the cleaning. The car was returned with greasy and oil markings on the seat and my carpet type floor mats were in a mess with oily foot prints all over it.

Doesn't the service centre use a cloth type material on the seats and papers on the mats before the vehicle is rolled into the service centre? Totally unhappy with the way they were working on the car when it was hoisted up for changing the gear oil. The tech working on the car was constantly hitting the door against the hydraulic lift causing the paint to chip off from the plastic cladding(was watching this from the lounge area).

Another thing noticed was, the water wash guy is accessing the roof by climbing onto the platic cowl near the wiper area. He had his foot near the wiper and sat on top of the car to apply soap. Very disheartening to see. Not very happy with what was done this time. The service center needs to work swiftly on the issues.

Vehicle was rolled in at 12:00 noon and returned by 5:00 PM. The work involved replacing gear oil, Vaccum Modulator and finally a water wash.

ASS folks are lethargic and have a callous attitude on customer machines. Needs a lot of improvement. Still the rattling issues were not addressed and I did not have the patience to get it done. Will send it separately to get it fixed.

Noticed a new issue today.

The AC condenser(the one behind the front grill) fan is not rotating. Though I never specifically looked into the grill, I was always under the opinion that it starts the moment AC is turned on because this is how it is in our other cars. Today I was standing beside the car with the AC running and noticed that the fan did not start along with the compressor. I waited for a few minutes to see if the fan starts after some time, but it did not. The gauge as usual is constant at a point slightly below the half mark. No overheating or anything.

Isn't the fan supposed to start along with the compressor in Scorpio CRDe? Or does it start only when there is overheating or something? I will try to diagnose the problem tomorrow, but wanted to know if it actually is normal.

Thankyou.

Update on my issue,

I could not wait till tomorrow, so started diagnosing from the fuse box and found it right there - blown fuse, clap:

I will watch it closely for the next few days. No idea why the fuse blew, there was absolutely no electrical additions or deletions to the vehicle.

I guess the fuse must have blown around a month back. Immediately after reaching home, I cover the car with a car cover. From the past month, I felt the hood tends to be much hotter than normal. I attributed this to the season as the engine temperature was always normal. The actual reason must be the condenser fan.

The non working condenser did not result in any rise of engine temperature which is good and I also did not notice any reduction in AC effectiveness, may be it was negligible. Had I not been standing next to the car today while it was idling, I'd have never noticed the condenser fan as there was no other symptom.

Hi Vinay,

Good ear you have there! Glad that you caught and rectified the issue.

The condenser fan in my Non-Crde scorpio failed and was jammed a year ago. The Service Center quoted 10K to replace the fan. I got it changed from a friendly neighborhood AC mechanic for 1500.

How did you diagnose this problem? What were the symptoms?

It's the front AC Fan just behind the front grill. It normally comes on when the AC is on for 10 minutes.

In the middle of June when the temperatures were reaching 45, with the AC on, the temperature was going up. I switched off the AC and drove back. When I got home and checked the AC Fan, it was not turning at all. It normally starts rotating and cooling the condenser after a few minutes of operation.

When we opened it it was jammed. Replaced it from the aftermarket.

BTW I went to get my AC serviced today. My dashboard has never been opened and the Cooling coil never removed to be cleaned. I went to Cool-days recommended here in team-bhp. Manjit Singh was away to Punjab for a wedding, but I met his senior mechanic Suresh.

He checked and told me that the cooling coil is dirty and we have 2 options.

Option 1. Remove the dashboard, get the Cooling Coil out, clean it and refit. And we would then have to fill Gas. Cost 3500 and time 1 day.

Option 2. Access the Cooling Coil from the side with a water hose and clean it there itself. Some water would come onto the carpet in this case. They would not be removing the complete dashboard and cooling coil, and would not have to fill gas. Time required 1 hr, cost with top-up of Gas Rs 750.

As my cooling was good anyways and I had no problems, I opted for Option2.

They took the scorpio to a 2Wheeler washing place nearby. Got a preassure hose into the scorpio from the side, accessed the Cooling Coil and washed it clean with the hose there itself. They put some thermocol sheets to minimize the water going onto the carpet. As I turned on the switch for the water hose, 2 of them from each side in the front cabin leaned down and cleaned the cooling coil behind the dashboard.

Some water got onto the Carpet, but with the hot sun I don't think it will take long to dry it off.

The front AC condenser was also cleaned up with the water hose.

Next step was to check the Gas. We all noticed that there was ice formation on the AC tube already and the AC was cooling perfectly. Suresh told me there is no need to top-up gas. I agreed. I asked him since he is not topping-gas at all how much did I need to pay him. We tried to call Manjit Singh ji, but he did not pick up the phone, probably doing bhangra at a wedding in punjab. I paid him 700 anyways and walked out a satisfied customer.

Suresh told me that they have managed to clean the cooling coil with the water hose pressure, and the airflow and cooling seems better.

HVK Sir you recently posted pictures of your Cooling coil out. How many times have you got it out till now, and how much did it cost ?

Styler.

In all these years, I have dismantled the dashboard & cleaned the cooling coil just once! It is a job to be done only a meticulous mechanic since it involves loosening the steering wheel, removing the dashboard, loosening the anti-collision bars & disconnecting all the major wiring. The work started at 930 am and got over at 230 pm or so with 2 mechanics fully dedicated to the job. The cooling coil was thoroughly pressure-washed with water, then dried with pressure jet of air and then naturally dried out. I think this was a job left out for too long but considering how complex the job is, better to do it only if you get the right guys. Anyone saying he has cleaned the cooling coil in any other manner can either be lying or definitely not done a good job. The way you did it - will definitely be of some relied but not the long-term remedy to thorough cleaning. I would rather take it off and clean it instead of water washing it behind the dashboard & risking some accident because of the wiring there.

The cleaning was done well, but the refitment of wires after that wasn't and I had to suffer the messed-up wiring for a couple of weeks thereafter. It cost me Rs 2,500.

After replacing the blown fuse, the condenser fan on my CRDe is running but is this how it is supposed to run?

It starts after a few seconds/minutes after the ac switch is pressed. The compressor starts immediately, but the condenser fan starts a little later. The fan continues even after the compressor stops or even after the ac switch is turned off. The fan continues for around two minutes even after the ac is turned off and then turns off. If I turn off the engine while the condenser fan is still running and turn on the ignition again, the fan continues to run and stops after a little while(just like the electric radiator fans on some cars). When the fan switches off, I hear a "tuk" sound as if there is some thermostat switch is there.

Is this how the condenser fan is supposed to work stupid:? is there a seperate switch controlling the condenser fan irrespective of whether is ac state? I was assuming that the fan is connected to the ac switch/compressor but does not seem like that.

Other than that, if I press the ac switch while the ignition is on(engine not running) the compressor does not engage. Compressor only engages only when the engine is running. Is this normal?

Some body put some light on this.

No alarm nothing, just that the engine check indicator keeps blinking and there is no self start. Even the SA tried jump start, but did not work.
When the SA connected the laptop, it shows two error codes ... no ecu response and immobilizer authentication failed.

Is the issue sorted out? What was the probelm?

Hi Surya,
It was a big relief to have the fan running because this was something needing immediate attention. Though there was no issue becuase of this, I was concerned because this may turn out into serious issue with summer temperatures on the rise. Now the fan is running, but not sure if this is how it is supposed to run, confused :).

Hello Styler,

Doesn't the fan come on along with the compressor? Do you think the fan behavious I mentioned above is normal?

Was there any reduction in air throw? Is there any issue that prompted you to go for a AC service or is it precautionary?

Is it a widely used practise to clean the coil with a pressure hose? doesn't it spoil other stuff under the dashboard leading to more complications?

Thanks,
-Vinay.

Hi Vinay,

The fan is controlled by a thermostat which senses the temperature of the Condenser. After the AC has been running a few minutes, the temperature rises and the fan turns on. So the fan will turn on and off according to the temperature. This is normal.

My Scorpio is 9 yrs old and done around 1 lac kms, so I thought the Cooling Coil would obviously be dirty and clogged. The cooling and airflow was fine but still I wanted it cleaned up as a preventive measure.
As HVK mentions removing the Cooling Coil is a very complicated and lengthy process so I was happy with getting the cooling coil washed under the dashboard. This is not a regular practice and it was an innovative idea of these guys at cool days.

So far so good, there have been no problems due to the washing. Even the carpets have almost dried up now.
