Ok so can you give a quick few steps procedure to getting the claying done :D
I guess it goes something like this:
1) Wash the car
2) Dry completely
3) Take one panel at a time, spray the lubricant in one area at a time, and rub the clay over it gently constantly checking to see that the clay isnt too dirty.
Then what? Do we wipe off that area that was clayed again before we wax? Or do we have to wash the car once more?
And I guess life of the clay totally depends on how dirty the car is. |
Oops ! I think some of us are posting without looking through the thread for answers. As a result we are asking questions which have been answered before. My submission is please look before you post. That way the value add will stay high. I would request all to look at the Autogeek videos on detailing. They are simply great and will answer many of the first time questions. Then post your questions and I am sure the gurus will respond. That way we will all learn.
For the question on clay : Determine what kind of clay it is. It can be mild or it can be abrasive. The latter is used in body shops, the DIY variety is mild. Wash the car to get rid of the surface grime. You do not have to dry the car.
1. Cut the 250 gm bar into 5 equal pieces (50 gm each). Take one and save the others in a zip bag for the future. If you have lube spray some on the lot before storage.
2. Take the 50gm piece and knead it into a patty of about 4'' dia circle.
3. Place it on your palm with your fingers slightly overshooting the patty. This is the best way to hold the clay or you will tend to put more pressure on the edges where your fingers are.
4. Lubricate the surface and rub the clay with mild pressure, initially it will stick and then it should start to move easier. Rub till the surface is so smooth that the clay glides over the paint. If it becomes dirty re-knead and re-patty so that you have a clear surface exposed. Get rid of the residue by spraying water and wipe dry.
5. Clay will expose the paint. It may not make it shine.
6. You must polish/wax after claying.
Depending on the condition of the paint one patty should last you 8/10 sessions. If you drop it DO NOT use it again.
That 250 gm bar should last you more than a year if you are doing one car. Remember that you do not have to clay every time you polish. If you take reasonable care of the car in-between, you should be OK if you clay every quarter.
Rgds
As my exams had finished, I went straight to 'Chawari Bazaar' to look for a DA.
After like roaming around and searching for a shop I found online, I finally found it!
The shop owner was kinda pleased when I told him that I had come looking for his shop after I found his website!
I inquired about a few sanders I had researched on(also shown on the website) and I finally got what I wanted!! :D
My first priority was 'DeWalt DW443' random orbital sander.
then 2nd one was Bosch GEX 270AE, GEX 150AC, GEX 125 AE and so on(
Depending on availability)
I was more than surprised when I finally found DW443!!!(usually I never find the priority one item in my list, especially never in India! lol stupid:)
I was like 'Niiiiccceee' when I first saw the actual thing!!
Here are a few pics
The box
Quick specs
Box opening
Nice!!
Six speed control
6 inch hook and loop backing plate
Specs
With the side handle attached
Couldn't find any foam polishing/cutting pads(obviously!)
so will be ordering them soon!
Also bought a Maktec Blower for drying my car after a wash without touching it!(as I think touching = scratching)
It looks and feels super sturdy!!
I'm real happy now! lol

Wicked man!
So can you attach any third party pads (Megs / lake country) and use this as a RO to polish and wax?
Yups!! :D
any 6.5 - 7inch foam/wool cutting etc.(all available from lake country, megs etc.)
and yes, it can carry out any task from compounding > polishing > finishing > sealant application(+ all liquid waxes)
I can even use it to fine sand the refinished panels with 2500-3000grit Megs unigrit sanding plates! :D

Congratulations ! First for finding the unit and second for getting it. Looks like a good unit with a 5mm throw so a hefty orbital action. I am impressed with the wattage. A higher wattage on a sander could damage the paint. This appears just right.
The con : you are stuck with a 6" backing plate (just as I 'm). But that is OK - only you will have to use your hand to polish nooks & crannies.
My recommendation will be stay with 6.5" pads. It will give you a margin on the BP. Anything above that will be too large unless used for a specific reason. Check the documentation /forums to see if you need to oil any parts of the unit before use. Saw that it uses a polarized plug. Ensure that your outlet has the same polarity. Avoid running it without the pad attached.
Congratulations again. I like the color. Did I also see a bag in your pics?
Rgds
^Thanks a lot Sir!
Yea! I know I'm stuck with 6" backing plate :( (but I guess replaceable backing plate = more money spent on different backing plates and pads! lol)
I'll be using 6.5" foam pads with it(I'll try a few 7" ones)
I too love the color! and there's a tiny bag which fits under the body to collect sanding dust in case I'm sanding!
will definitely be careful with the plug and socket! Thanks :D

Thanks a lot! Really appreciate it! :D
btw the foam pads are yet to arrive!!
after that I'll do a full detailing session(Wash-clay-strip-3step compounding, polishing, finishing - strip(removing fillers etc.) - (optional glaze) - sealant - wax)
Congrats on the acquisition of the new stuff. Finally you are all set for a complete detailing job.:thumbs up Hope the first victim of this is not your i20.:D do keep us updated on the progress and post detailed before and after pics (as they say on Megs forum EXTREME MAKEOVER PICS)

FF did not give me any such warning. Besides, I think ICICI is affiliated to that site.
