Accent-Power Steering issue, after oil change.

All was well, till i got the power steering oil replaced at the regular service.
Now,i feel slight vibration, through the steering wheel, when it is held at one position, turning it a bit gets rid of the vibration, and as soon it is held at one position, the slight grinding noise and vibration starts again.
The Pump was not touched, and oil was flushed from the container itself.
and replaced with Valvoline oil.
What can go wrong,by just replacing the oil?
I have driven around 15Kms after the change, the steering is behaving normally, just for the slight grinding noise and vibration.

Re: Accent-Power Steering issue, after oil change.

did they use correct grade Power Steering oil?

Hyundai ASC once told me that the entire thing needs to be drained through the lower channels(??) if yes, then something is fouling - get it checked again.

I asked, about the grade, and they told me this is what they use.
it was valvoline brand, and i still have the oil container with me.
They didnt drain it through the lower channels, they rather pumped it out through the container, and filled in fresh oil.
Now,i am thinking why on earth did i get it changed, when everything was fine.

Re: Accent-Power Steering issue, after oil change.

Hyundai ASC in Kolkata said that they do not change the PS oil until and unless the oil has become very thick and steering very hard and they drain / bleed the oil (like brake/clutch oil bleeding) through some channel. FIAT ASC in Kolkata also said in similar lines.

check area near the steering rod / PS belt (check manual) - if something is fouling.

Ouch! - did you try and increase the rev by a small amount to see if the vibration stops?

Dear Akshay

I carefully went through the problem which you are facing with your power steering unit.

The vibes and grinding noise in a power steering unit is from the power steering pump and it is due to the following reasons

1. steering fluid reservoir not filled upto the mark.

2. power steering line has not been "bled" correctly. Bleeding of power steering unit is mandatory while replacing entire fluid. For that, please do the following

a. fill the reservoir with recommended power steering fluid upto the mark.
b. with the reservoir opened, the steering wheel has to be turned fully left and fully right for a couple of times. during this, you can see bubbles in the reservoir. this is the process of removing the trapped air in the line. if this air is not removed, it will pass through the power steering pump. The pump will try to pressurize the fluid which is present inside, but unfortunately, since air is compressible, it ( the pump ) will not be able to pressurize the fluid and it will starve for power steering oil. This is the cause for your observation.

cheers

Re: Accent-Power Steering issue, after oil change.

Thanks, that was informative, and yes,the mechs were turning the steering left and right while flushing the oil.
Just got off the phone with one of them, and they have asked me to just open the cap of the reservoir and close it,and top up if necessary.
Car is in the parking lot, will do this ASAP and revert here.

Re: Accent-Power Steering issue, after oil change.

How was the oil pumped out from the container? was the engine running while the oil was being drained?

Re: Accent-Power Steering issue, after oil change.

The engine should not be on when draining the oil as it causes damage to the pump, the method which i follow to drain my cars power steering oil is to open the suction side (low pressure) bolt on the pump and turn the wheels to remove all the old oil, then engine should be started after filling fresh oil to max level and the oil level should not be allowed to drop below min level when engine is running.

Last night I drove her around for 55kms after adding around 50 ml of oil.
And it seems to be running fine and yeah
Steering now feels a bit lighter than before( I really don't know if it's for good or bad)

Dear Akshay

That is alright. Light steering should not be an issue in city driving.

On the highway, you will get used to the "light" feel once you do a considerable amount of highway kilometers.

Nice to see that you are happy with your accent's steering as before

cheers

Re: Accent-Power Steering issue, after oil change.

Sorry for digging this old thread but I have a problem with power steering fluid of my accent. Yesterday while checking for coolant I found power steering fluid at MIN mark. ON starting the engine the level goes slightly up. So while coming back I picked up a bottle of power steering fluid of castrol make. Now problem is the existing fluid in the car is of green colour and the one that I bought is of bronish colour, so is it advisable to use this one to top up?

Re: Accent-Power Steering issue, after oil change.

Hi all,

Can any one suggest a reasonable and genuine Hyundai Service workshop in Pune( Not the authorized ones who fleece you). I have rattling/vibration even after replacing drive shafts in the car.

Thanks
