All you enthusiastic drivers : Do NOT OVER-REVV

Just came across these posts on the S2000 board, and was surprised that some S2000's have had to go in for a complete engine rebuild. Some of the cars were almost brand new, while some were fairly run...but none even close to what you would term as an end-of-its-life kinda engine.

After some further investigation, I also found lots of Corolla, Nissan, Mercedes and various other car owners who ended up with their engines seized after a bout of really aggressive driving. It doesnt matter if you didnt hit and bump off the revv-limiter..Even if you stayed at the red-line consistently...chances are your engine is already damaged.

Also do take a lot of care while downshifting or mis-shifting, especially when you are in a high rpm range. While you may intend to shift from 3rd to 4th and mistakenly end up in 2nd - You can say bye bye to your engine.

I am really surprised as I would have thought that the revv-limiter would be modestly set so even if you do bump of the limiter (when you engine feels like its jerking - fuel supply cut off), it wouldnt really damage your engine.

You have been warned. Respect your machinery and it will, in turn, respect you back.

This is a sample over-revved S2000 engine. Owner got more than his dose of Vtec'ing

I am certain Dippy remembers going down to second, instead of fourth....And this was after redlining!

If over revving is taking the car to 4000 to 5000rpm before upshifting then I do it nearly everyday....Please dont tell me that this will damage the engine? Coz I love driving this way. Whats the point in having a fast car if you cant rev it.

At the track recently, I was on the red band all the time and I downshifted once or twice at high revs from 3rd to 2nd, hope I didnt do any damage to the engine :O!

Man this is scary. When this can happen to the best engines in the world then what will happpen to other. Happened to me once i Shifted from 6700 RPM in second to 1st rather then 3 rd and the engine went crying i immediately dumped the clucth and moved on. Have done it with Santro the car jerked.

No offence meant, but just what the heck were you doing with Santro at 6700 rpm?

I think we can ignore the 6700 rom, can't we? He shouldn't be doing anything with a Santro on the road in the first place at the age of 17.
