Today the alternator system of my santro went kaput. Totally Dead.
Went to replace it and found this at the HASS.

Just noticed the i20 has the smallest compressor 90 cc... smaller than a 3.5 lac santro!! No wonder the A/c is useless!! The getz had a 155 cc unit!

Also the Verna Fluidic compressor is approx 24 % smaller than the old Verna! (122 cc vs 160 cc) Smart? Increased efficiency? Only time will tell...

Is it something to do with European market where you don't need a powerful AC ?

This is absolutely shocking. Why such small compressor on i20 ? Even the half priced Santro gets a bigger unit. Not sure what could be the reason behind this el-cheapo tactic by Hyundai. Owners of i20 have been complaining since a year and a half about the sub-par performance of the AC, and Hyundai's complete apathy to the suffering customers must have left a bad taste. I have lost all my faith on Hyundai. Everynow and then, they remove features from their cars without even a whisper in the market i.e. Rear Discs removed from Verna, 6th gear discontinued from i20 D, ABS removed from i20 Magna D.

Same goes for Fluidic Verna I guess. Given the increased cabin space & reduced compressor size over its predecessor, I am sure complaints will soon be flowing in T-bhp reviews. As said by AbhiJ, Only time will tell.

i20 has compressor of just 90cc which is equal to what the small ZEN had.
It clear a lot why people complain a lot about i20 ac .

90cc looks very much under powered. I have experienced low cooling when i am travelling with my friend in his i20. My i10 ac cooling is really good. But Manza is not up to the mark.

90 cc for i20? With such a underpowered compressor too, it sweats to pull when loaded with 5 people. :Frustrati

The 1.2L engine from hyundai is not at all suited for i20 even with higher state of tune.Hyundai got the basics wrong with this.They should have plonked in a 1.4 Petrol and given a bigger 150 CC compressor.

Dunno which bloke in hyundai finalised the design specification of AC for i20:Frustrati 90CC! HUH!

For the engine part its the government norms to play with !

They already have a 1400cc petrol. Albeit in automatic avataar.

For the compressor part. Agreed. Cooling power is more important than loading all models with ACC

To best of knowledge, they used 90cc compressor to save power of the engine. If they would have used 110cc compressor, the car would have lacked power and also low on fuel efficiency.

Alto has the said compressor. Though the 800cc engine is sapped of power, I've never had bad FE days with the A/C on. With the K10, the drop in power is almost negligible. So, I don't think it makes sense to skimp on A/C for the I20.

Being a known unsuitable unit(compressor), Hyundai should offer a free upgrade like FIAT did.

Dude, what about the diesel?

It has more that enough power to run a 150 cc compressor.

Also Getz also had a 1.1, 1.3 ltr engine and had a big compressor + great A/c

90cc is a tad too small for a car whose interior space is comparable to sedans. Doesn't this also translate into a higher load for the compressor & thereby increasing chances of a premature compressor failure or reduced life?

Any idea on what are the compressor sizes for Ritz (D), Swift (D), Vista (D) & Micra (D)? Do these cars also have small compressors or it's just Hyundai turning the tide the other way?

let us not jump the gun purely on the cc of the compressor ; it is the efficiency of the compressor that matters more.

If you comapre the compressors in ,say a Corolla and the nhc,you'll find the nhc's at least twice as big as the Corolla's-and that for a smaller cabin

True , I have heard horror stories about the i20 ac but it could not be on account of the compressor only.

Not just a wild thought, but a very valid one. That's also the reason most European cars sold in India (e.g. Superb, Laura, Mercs) have such poor air-conditioners. Either that, or their air-con compressors wear out way too quickly (because they are working twice as hard as they were designed to).

In this case, it is. The i20 has way too small a compressor for a car of its class.
