I'll take a 6 speed box with short ratios on the first 5 and closely stacked. Make the 6th a tall overdrive for cruising.

Tall gearing is preferred on a large sedan or touring car for comfortable road (highway) cruising. Short gearing on the other hand is preferable on a sports car.

I'd actually prefer a balance between the two for everyday use. Too short is a pain on highways and too tall will be a pain in the city.

I prefer short gear boxes ..but then it should be a 6 speed with overdrive as the 6th gear.
just love to keep my hand on the gear knob and shift and hear the revs rise before shifting again...

i am in anyhow shortening gear ratio of my esteem. i prefer shorter ratios coz i am fed up with the horrible ratios of the carin the city. i also want 2 know how can i shorten it in the simplest way. 1) reducing tyre dia
2) changing final drive ratio. can anyone tell an approximate cost for doing the (2)?

I too would prefer a close ratio box with a tall overdrive, preferably 6th.

Haven't responded to the poll as the question needs to be re-worded, I guess...

i would prefer....short at fr the starting gears ...n a really tall one fr the last
which i think might help in both pick up and top speed

just wanted to clarify this... are we talking about the gear ratios here, or the actual gear shifting (eg: short shifters)? or are they the same thing?!
if this is a stupid question... hey, i'm only human

I am happy with short gearing of Petra in 1 and 2, but 3,4 and 5 seem to have some good range. 3rd gear lets me go to 80+ from as low as 25-30 KMPH and 4th lets me any where between 40 and almost 100 KMPH. I'd not like to be in 1st and second much.

You've got it wrong somewhere. 3rd and 4th maxing out below 100kmph????

PS : Do you drive a Petra 1.9 by any chance?
