From what I have read (note that I have never witnessed nor participated in an oil change) the correct procedure takes much longer - even couple of hours to let the oil drain out completely - after the oil flows out in large quantities, it starts to drip and that itself is almost ~200ml or so of oil.

But other experts can comment more.

True, but then if we look for that kind of perfection, it'll be difficult. In that sense, after those hours if you use an engine flush, it'll prolly free up 20-30ml of oil more!

For example, one can spend hours on perfecting wheel alignment, but it's done within 15 mins at most places.

80-100ml or 5% of old oil or so left back during a mid term oil change is fine with me. (Personally) I'd find waiting for 'couple' of hours to drain oil abit of an overkill. I own a regular passenger car, not a precision driven supercar.

Anyway. To each his own.

Interesting. While I agree with you n the duration, wonder if a filter change is also warranted at the same time (at 7.5K)? I currently end up topping the oil at around 7.5 K post service which practically ends up into changing the oil completely.

One other important criteria is the type of Air-filter used. A clean air-filter will require TC to work less to provide the required boost - decreases EGT and thereby, increases the life of the Turbo-charger itself.

1. All OEM filters are paper type: These filters are to be replaced only and NOT to be cleaned. If cleaned by using blower (blowing air in the opposite direction), pore-size increases and the filter will NOT be able to filter dust particles as before. This will lead to MAF and engine-oil contamination!!

Replace OEM air-filters mid-way into service, if you live in dusty / construction area. Otherwise, leave it alone until periodical service. Please do not clean them - But just dusting is OK, in case of an emergency.

2. Performance Air-filters which use oil to trap dust: Clean them periodically as per instructions. These filters let in more air and do NOT filter as well as the OEM filters. Therefore, expect it to contaminate MAF and engine-oil, faster than OEM filters.

MAF may require cleaning periodically - It is best to change engine-oil mid-way in to service. Particularly so, if is is a TC engine.


Three things determine the health of an engine: 1. Engine oil Temp 2. Engine oil pressure and 3. Exhaust gas temperature.

By replacing right quantity / quality of engine-oil and air-filter on time, most of the problems can be avoided. Please use only the oil-grade recommended by the OEM. Never add excess oil!! Too much of nothing is good!!

As a direct answer to poll question - yes, I stick to manufacturer recommendations. They also state the service interval in time. Engine oil is obviously good for certain KMs or time. Whichever is earlier, it should be done. My XUV is recommended to be serviced every year or 20K interval. That assumes their *ideal* driving conditions which I assumed to be typical Urban commute. So while 20K Kms feels very long, a year isn't too far anyway.

And I think it's not fair to term engine oil change as "modification". It's maintenance. Hence comparison is not ideal IMHO.

Modifications are required based on individual needs. Like my XUV would need HID kit, but upsize tyre or ECU Remap, I don't think so until there is dire need.

For my Ford Figo:
Initial 3 years, my running was not more than 650km per month, less bumper-to-bumper commuting, more long drives. So changed oil as recommended at 1 year interval.
After that, I changed jobs, so bumper-to-bumper commuting doubled. Hence, started changing oil at 6-7 months, which is close to 8000km of running.

Voted for "Whatever the manufacturer recommends". My drive is a Vento TDI.

But I'm thinking if I need to make the oil change more frequent (like ~10,000KMS) because of all the reasons specified by GTO.

However, for my other rides I maintain following intervals:

RE-TBTS - 1 Year or 3000 KMS (whichever comes early)

Honda Activa - 6 months, though this scooter runs very less.

Chose the 5k to 7.5k. But i don't think i have waited to clock 5k for an oil change. Oil change at adequate intervals will almost ensure a decent engine performance over the years. We do get better oils these days. But even then it doesn't stop me or a few of my friends from changing the oil way before the stated km rating or duration.

I changed the oil on my BMW 116i M sport manual GB @ 2000 kms and then at 7000 kms.The manufacturer recommendation is 15000 km!!

Commercial vehicles recommend a extremely varied oil change interval for different applications. Volvo bus has a interval of a full 1,00,000 km (one lakh) for intercity application, and only 40000 km for charter bus and urban application. http://www.volvobuses.com/SiteCollec..._UK_051006.pdf check page 10 for service intervals.
Even with this, many intercity operators have buses with 30 lakh km on odo which run as good as new do not emit smoke, etc. But mixed run and charter operation buses have engines that draw oil and smoke with barely 10 lakh on the odo.

Choice was simple, as my XUV needs Oil change every 20K Kms / once in 1.5 yrs. (I use XUV only for my home town commute every weekend)

Service interval of my other vehicles include
M800 :10K Kms (usually 6-8 month period)
TB AVL : 2750 - 3500 Kms (usually 2-3 month period)
Scooty Pep : Once in 6 months (no matter how much it has run)

FIAT recommends Selenia 5W-40 Grade Synthetic Oil from Petronas. However your dealer workshop may charge you ~4000 bucks + labour charges. Instead I would recommend you to order the above list from 99rpm.com and get it done by yourself in a trustable nearby garage.

Just get the brake fluid and engine coolant filled in the FIAT workshop.

Thanks for your inputs srivatsahg, got her serviced yesterday fro Fiat ASS. changed the oil , got the Selenia WR 5W40, changed the oil filter, air filter, diesel filter and AC filter. They also topped up the brake fluid, power steering fluid and engine coolant.

However i did not opt for entire change of the coolant and brake fluid since the mechanic said it is ok, but can you pls guide me if it is ok to continue this way. My Punto has run 15000 kms in 2 years. Am i risking something here by not changing the coolant & or brake fluid completely
