Just heard a TV report that said 3 people died in their car when the AC gas leaked suddenly. Dont know what make of car and other details. Pretty scary though!

Have you folks heard of similar incidents or is this a freak accident?

Excessive inhalation of R-134a might lead to breathlessness and in extreme cases fatality.

It wasnt AC-gas it seems, but Carbon Monoxide that was fatal.

its CO re.

It happned last yr too it seems. Those who stay in their cars for longer hours do re-circulate the air to avoid CO buildup.

Noted the report in Times of India today. The report was comparing similar incidents in Santro cars. Is there any design fault in Santro. Quite scary.
Hyundai has refuted it to be carbon monoxide !!

Today TOI reported 3 dead in Santro due to Carbon Monoxide. The same incident took place around a month ago. This time also passangers were switched on AC and was sleeping inside the car and engine was on.

I am just curios about to know how many santro owners in team-bhp have tried sleeping in the car while AC is switched on ?

Same I would like to ask other car owners. So that we should make some conclusion, is it the problem with Santro cars only ? Or what could be the reason of leaking the Carbon Monoxide inside the car ? Is there any way to check this gas inside the car ?

One thing is sure the Carbon Monoxide is generating by engine and not with the AC. But the question is the gas is leaking inside the cabin ? AC intake is opened in the engine ? If yes, can we change the AC intake position ?

How is the arrangement of AC intake in other cars ?

Yep, this is the second time within months & again it is a santro. really shocking that it happened in GN Chetty road, one of the prime business area in chennai. To think that we (chennai T-BHPians) were within a KM of that on the same night is really scary.:Shockked:

really sad, but true. it has happened to santro cars within a few months of each other. we were having a T-BHP meet not too far away from the scene when it was happening. This is really worth discussing here. Experts, please let everyone know how to avoid such situations. :)

Is this an issue very specific to the santro? because the other family was also stuck in the rain and died such. my question was that if the exhaust is covered by water, does that not cut off the car (like how it works on bikes). Where is the possibility of a "leak".
is it that the engine compartment is cut off from circulation as there is water under the car: and that is sucked into the a/c ?

Its very disheartening to hear this news and frightening too for I own a Santro myself ... Have never tried sleeping in a car with the AC on myself and wouldnt try it not that I'm claustrophobic but generally even though I use an AC at Home have read somewhere that being in such closed spaces with very little or virtually no ventilation / exhaust just is not the right thing to do.

Freons are known to be dangerous if in high concentrations - remember that from my school/college days.

From what i heard the car was wading through water during the heavy downpour... and the central locking jammed after the car stalled.

i also heard they called someone for help... i dunno the rest of the story....

to me it appears like the tailpipe was underwater and hence reversing exhaust gases into the cabin... resulting in a slow unconcious death to the occupants...

sad... may those sould rest in peace...

I have heard quite a lot of these during the Mumbai rains. That central locking were jammed and also the power windows in rains and people died inside cars. There should be some trip switch, which should over-ride these electronic things and people should be able to get out. I read in ACi (dont remember the issue date)that sales of such devices like Autocop etc, has dipped because of these incidents.

There was another one as well few months back. This is was in Faridabad killing 4 of of the family

the co relesed by the engine is sucked inside by the blowers, this might be the reason for the death
