You have to drain the existing coolant and fill - run - drain atleast 2 cycles of distilled water to remove all traces of coolant from the system. I think once you see clear water when you drain the system, you can fill in the Toyota coolant.

In my opinion, it is too much of effort for 3 cars. I would rather use a radiator flush, drain the old one and fill the new coolant of the same/similar type

I was trying to get green premix coolant in the market[Castrol Radicool SF-O Premix] but that's kinda rare to find. The distilled water bottles in local battery shops are all filled with floating impurities, which makes me skeptical about their quality. Even boodmo doesn't have green premix.

Just get it from a petrol pump - you seem to have fresher stock there.

Those green coolants are all rated for tap water mixing let alone distilled water .. and proudly state the fact on the label, like with Valvoline.

Mixing whatever distilled water you have available will be a vast improvement over "open the tap in the garage and fill water to top up". Make sure the dilution ratio is correct when you are doing this and it should be fine.

Re: Types of Coolants and debunking myths associated with grades & colours

Awesome thread @Vishy76, very informative. Never knew there were such significant differences between coolant types, I always thought of them as different colored coolants. Went through the user manual of our 99 Omni & 06 Swift. Both recommend ethylene glycol based coolant, which has been working well in my case without any issue over the years. The Omni went through a radiator replacement 2 year back (replaced proactively at the 20 year mark), the radiator was still clean & without any trace of rust. The water pump is also stock till date. The coolant was changed at regular intervals & mixed only with distilled water.

From the 99 Omni user manual:

From the 06 Swift user manual:

Re: Types of Coolants and debunking myths associated with grades & colours

I was just wondering, the Suzuki engines that are used in Glanza and Urban Cruiser, what colour coolant do they use from the factory? Do they use the Suzuki Green Coolant or the Toyota's Long Life Pink?

Suzuki K Series engine = the Suzuki Green coolant will work. Depending on how Toyota's coolant is formulated, who knows, the red might work too and probably will work because Toyota will not have wanted to add a separate coolant just for one or two car models.

Re: Types of Coolants and debunking myths associated with grades & colours

Hi,

I need some help! A month back a mechanic at shell pump insisted I change coolant in my honda city. He fully drained and replaced coolant with Shell EasyCare Engine Coolant (Colour indicator : Blue).

One some quick googling it seems to be Ethylene glycol type - https://shellcarcareproducts.com/en-...-use-blue-437/
From what I gather this is wrong type for city's aluminium engine.

I am look for advice if my analysis is correct and I should get the coolant immediately changed.

Mental Note - never open hood in shell petrol pumps!

Change it for peace of mind and never allow shell pump attendants to check engine oil coolant etc levels. It is a common scam with them.

Thanks for the reply! Could this coolant cause any corrosion/harm to engine/cooling system in the last 1 month (1500kms) timespan? I am just over thinking it?
Getting the coolant changed at ASS tomorrow, apparently switching coolant requires thorough flush with distilled water and chemical flush (I hope ASS does this correctly)

A few flushes with distilled water should be enough. I doubt any serious damage was done in a bare 1500 km. A coolant flush isn’t all that necessary but do it if you like.

Re: Types of Coolants and debunking myths associated with grades & colours

Experts,

I am planning for a 14 day long trip with my Ford Freestyle TDCi early next month. Got the general check-up done today with all fluid levels topped up. I still would want to keep some backup coolant handy as the terrain I plan to travel is harsh. Any idea which one to buy, ford ASC could not give me some examples apart from the picture I could take of what they use in-house(I do not need 5lts, hence did not buy from them). Types of Coolants and debunking myths associated with grades & colours-whatsapp-image-20210823-22.02.27.jpeg

Please help with a few examples that can be ordered over amazon or from nearby shell petrol bunks.

Thank you!

That is a pre mixed coolant rather than a concentrate where you pour one litre and add 3-4 litres distilled water. So you will need close to 5 litres or even more if you have an Endeavour.

Check your manual - I think an alternate coolant grade is recommended when you can’t get Ford coolant. Check Amazon for that grade.

Or my advice is buy the 5L can from the Ford service centre or any Ford authorised parts distributor.

Re: Types of Coolants and debunking myths associated with grades & colours

I have an Ignis 2020 petrol model. Was reading this informative thread and then reached for the manual to see what coolant should I keep as backup. There's a Delhi-Goa-Mangaluru road trip coming up. The Ignis manual says this: "Always use a high quality ethylene glycol base non-silicate type coolant diluted with distilled water at the correct mixture concentration."

So this "ethylene glycol base non-silicate type" would be which one among the three types of coolant mentioned in the post? Anyone who can suggest the exact brand and model to buy that matches this Maruti description?

On a side note and bit off topic for this thread, I have seen that many here are from Bengaluru/Mangaluru region. Would anyone be up for a drive from Mangaluru to Goa in first half of December? It will be on my return leg from Mangaluru. Can post details on DM if anyone can join in tentatively. Thanks.

Standard green coolant. Castrol Radicool or Valvoline are excellent.

Re: Types of Coolants and debunking myths associated with grades & colours

Hi All ,

Wanted your advice

I took my i20 ( Dec 2019 Model ) to the shell petrolbunk yesterday , they opened my hood and checked the coolant. The mechanic dripped the coolant onto a surface and told me that the coolant quality is not good and that its just water now . He told me that the coolant has to be in blue color but mine is colourless so its spoit and asked me to replace it there itself with their shell coolant

Since i still have a free service coming up next month i did not change it there in shell petrolbunk.

But i have a 200km drive this weekend , and i am worried now.

My coolant level is full but i wanted to know if the shell mechanic is indeed right.

Does the coolant for my i20 have to in Blue?
My coolant is colourless , does that mean that my coolant is spoilt ?
Any advice will be highly appreciated
