The cost is very high. You need to cahnge the dashboard. so it varys from car to car. Ave cost for Marutis is around 25K. You can claim insurance for Airbags - 100% claimable

Cost varies, but the cost of the actual airbag is around the same price. Here is the break up of costs involved with a Skoda Octavia.

Drivers airbag: 27,999
Pass. airbag: 53,149
Airbag module: 16,500
Upper dashboard: 45,266
Total: 1,42,917/- (all prices circa 2005)

I'm sorry to say that Insurance will only cover 50% of that cost. Crazy as it is, they say that as it is not metal, they pay only 50% of the costs!

Depends on how old the vehicle is.. If the vehicle is under 6 months old you can claim 100%.

Paras that was utter crap. you want to pay premium price to buy a airbag fitted car and then you want a "switch" to turn it off? Thats ridiculous. I mean, you would rather risk your life in a life-threatening scenario but not have the security of the airbag blowing up? What do you want a airbag for? Just to brag about it? Do yourself a favor bro. Do not buy a airbag fitted version. You will save yourself a packet on day one.

air bags save lives.it should be made compulsory for all cars.
i hope someday the govt and car manufacturers team up to make it affordable on all cars.
that said they save lives only when the passengers are wearing their seatbelts.
@paras:i'm sure you're joking right?

I'm sure paras was joking. And in that light, I can assure you that the hospital bill will be far more expensive that the airbags! lol

On a more serious note, a serious issue is that some owners refuse to install new airbags once they have an accident. The Skoda dealer told me of many fights on this subject. The owners, on seeing the costs, simply state that they do not want airbags! The Skoda dealers are forbidden to carry out the repair work unless new airbags are installed, however there is no stopping the owner from getting a patch up job done outside.

@ Rtech - The airbags dont cost much, its the dashboard + Steering which doubles the cost, doesnot it?

Read post #4 of this thread for the break up of costs. It varies from vehicle to vehicle. Some cars, you don't need to change the dashboard, others you do. But the actual airbags themselves cost quite a packet still.

Thats some cost! Cars should simply come with a Kurl-On mattress in between the driver-passenger and the dash with a cutout in it for reaching the steering wheel.
