Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

Generally when we do long road trips, the most senior person in the car gets to keep the spare key safely with them.

Sharing a backup key incident. So, I reached my office and I had to park on the street. I took my stuff out, clicked the door lock manually, kept the keys on the seat and the door closed. It was after a few moments I realised that my home keys and car keys are inside the car. It was 9am in the morning and no key services were open. I purchased a newspaper and put its sheets on the front glass to deter people from looking inside. My wife who is a teacher, finishes her work at 1pm. I gave her a call and asked her to bring me the spare key. She went home and got me the key. Thankfully, my office is just 12kms from home.

I have seen videos on the internet where people stick a keybox under their cars with high strength magnets. I love that idea, but seeing the road conditions we drive on, it will surely fall off.

Keep the primary key in your pocket and the secondary key in the car by removing the battery from it.

Thank you for pointing this out. I was wondering why is no one talking about this and only suggesting to give the spare key to the spouse.

If the primary key battery dies or malfunctions, cant one just use the mechanical key inside it to unlock the car?

Or is there more to it that i am not aware of ?

Spare set is always with my wife in her handbag. No chance of it's being left in the car.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

I have been following this way of keeping the spare key fob in wifey's handbag for all our long trips from last 10 years may be and I always request her to take it out every time we leave the car.
My 2020 Creta came with Bluelink, which works at times (story for some other time). If in case the main key dies or stops working and the second key is inside the car, i can at least use bluelink (and pray that it works at that time ) to unlock the car and that that out.

I would say keep the spare key with you / spouse after removing the battery inside. Keep a new spare battery separately. You can install the battery anytime you need and start using the key.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

MG Hector has mobile app based digital key feature, it allows you to unlock car/even start car remotely using bluetooth without any physical key.
You can also share this digital key with your friends/family's mobile phone while you are travelling.

This is much more convenient than carrying a spare key.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

Another related topic: How to prevent accidental key press while carrying key in your pocket?

Many times, accidental button press while key is in pocket have accidently unlocked, even remotely opened the trunk. Imagine you going in a restaurant parking car outside, and unknowingly trunk opens up remotely with all your valuables inside! Or, remotely opening up all windows and sunroof while it's raining at parking spot! I am now paranoid of keeping key in the pocket, and tend to carry key in the hand after parking the car.

I wish key fobs had a small on/off switch to prevent accidental remote operation.
Have you guys faced similar situation? how do you manage it?

P.S. Now I am even thinking of opening up the key fob and disconnecting all buttons and live with only keyless entry. I would lose all fancy remote key features, but at least will have peace of mind
