Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

There is always the danger of losing the key e.g. dropping the key in the gutter while getting in / out of the car. I do not bother about the spare key while I am moving locally, but carry the spare while on outstation trips.

Once while changing after a run, my Jetta key got locked inside the boot. Went home and got the spare. Fine with such short excursions. Would have been an unnecessary hazzle should that happen on a long drive.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

Better to leave the spare fob with a trusted person when on trips (within city of course). My fob became inoperative while on a customer visit and my friend who had the spare drove down 20 mins to where I was stranded and helped unlock the car. Also I believe if the main fob fails to function while on a road trip (outside city limits) you could always rely on your RSA for support.

I upgrade to compass a week back and it has a keyless entry which makes me wonder how to do the same? If I carry my backup key in the car, its not gonna lock or unlock as the same is in the proximity.
Any ways to avoid the same happening ?
My suggestion is to keep your spare key somewhere safe and rotate the keys every 3 months.

Coming to Compass, you still have provision to unlock your car from your JeepLife app and does not require a key fob ( atleast to unlock and get in ).

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

Very interesting thread. I did not think of this scenario all my years of driving either cars or bikes. Always left the back up keys at home. Time to adopt a new strategy

I do this and it works.
But wifey has the problem of leaving her bag in the car and I need to keep reminding her when the car does not lock and beeps, but that’s a small price to pay.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

My 2012 Etios has the key and the remote fob separate. So I always carry the remote fob on me, thus avoiding a lock out.
Never carried the spare key though, since my main worry was always about being locked out.

However, I have noticed that the car is unable to lock itself only if I press the black keyless entry button on door handle to lock it. If I press the button on remote/ smart key, instead of the request sensor, the car locks itself as any normal car.
Dont know for other car brands but in Hyundai it works if you use remote to lock the car.
Give it a try.
I've a Creta, and this did not work for me last week. Had placed the regular key fob that I was using in mom's handbag - as it's battery is low, which she kept inside the car. I got out and tried locking the car, it wouldn't lock with the spare remote key or the request button on the driver's door.

Carrying the spare key inside the car - doesn't that void the insurance if the car is stolen with that spare key ? I remember reading a clause in the Insurance documents to have both the keys surrendered to them in order to process a claim against theft.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

Keeping the spare car key inside car is pointless as many have said. But this is to clarify that for any reason whatsoever, you can keep the spare key inside the car with push button start and request sensor. You just need to lock and unlock the car using remote and in such case request sensor will not work while the other key is still inside.

I am forced to carry both keys of my Grand i10 many times (like cleaning guy returning the in use key but I took another key incase I don’t find him downstairs) and after all R&D, I lock the car with spare remote key inside while i go out for local trips.
For long trips, both of us carries a key and always keep them with self (never leave in a locked car)

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

During a solo camping trip in 2021 in Northern California, I locked my car with the key inside. (Mine is without a proximity sensor).

To call the roadside assistance, there was no proper mobile signal in the campground, and I had to walk for a considerable distance to get a feeble signal and then called for road side assistance. Then also some of the outsourced vendors whom my roadside assistance uses, refused to come since it was a remote area. Finally, after multiple tries one of the vendors agreed and unlocked the car which took almost 5 hours of my trip.

From that day, I always keep the dump key in my pocket for long drives. The dump key cannot start the car, at least I can open the door if the key is locked inside.

Re: How to carry a backup car key when travelling

I fail to see the scenario where you loose car key unless you are careless with the key. And if you are careless, you can very well loose both keys.
In 27 yrs of my driving and riding, I have never needed the second key or carried it. Just be more aware and responsible. For dead battery, much easier to carry a spare pair of batteries.

Can't trust the better half's handbag because there's just so many of them!

In my case the 2nd key is in my jeans coin pocket at all times while traveling out of Mumbai.

The company made the second key for careless and irresponsible people like us. You can reject the second key on delivery and negotiate a discount of 5k at least.
