everyone here is looking for max power max torque etc. lets try out max kpl by using sound and inovative techniques .ideas with the existing engines ...

Get rid of dead weight.
Keep tires at recomended pressure.
Fill good quality fuel.
Keep the vehicle well maintained.
Play ghazals in the background.
Drive before 7am and after 10pm:)

1>hot air intake,
2> throttle body heating,
3>fuel injection along with forced air induction ,
4>slimmer tyres,
5> taller gear ratios.
6> lighter cars,
7>redesigning the coolent path/ system to keep the engine hotter for extended time when parked .
8>insulating the engine to prevent the heat loss by conduction and radiation.
9>covering the lower side of the engine in a flat belly design to reduce eddies,
10>lean burn engines.
11>atkinson cycle <in which expansion stroke is @20 %longer than compression stroke e.g.miller cycle>
12>variable cam phasing
13>displacement on demand <cylinder de activation>
14>variable cam timing :)

Basically you mean to say RUN LEAN? Isn't that harmful to the engine?

how much FE increase do these steps give and how much do they cost ?

not "lean" but with stoichiometric ratio (14:1) of fuel and air mixture, which is very hard to achieve.

Hi TURBOSAM,

You found out some interesting & innovative ideas for FE improvement.Keep discussion going on on every aspects so that we can get benefit.

Using hot air intake improves Thermal Efficiency,a key parameter for FE improvement which is almost never discussed.

Why don't manufacturers just run the intake lines around the exhaust, or run engine coolant around the intake pipes then? I'm sure we'd all get 90 billion kilometres to each drop of petrol.

What about different types of clutch systems? One of the simplest ways to max kmpl is judicious use of clutch while driving.

How can various design/types of clutches contribute to increasing kmpl?

Should it not be "cold" air intake?
The logic that I was told is that cold air is denser than hot air, hence you are supplying more air to the engine, giving a higher air:fuel ratio.

The denser the air the more will be the fuel supplied.

not at all for my car - but just want to know

1) what it costs ?
2) whether buying a diesel or plonking a LPG/CNG cyinder or going electric is cheaper

yes , many car manufacturers do provide either heated air intakes-- uno carb version has a thermostat which enables the engine to suck hot air from around exaust manifold automatically when the ambient temp is low! ----or heated throttle bodies_----palio 1.2 has heated throttle body <and instead of just disconnecting it people pay money to fit cold air intake systems!!!> hot air helps automise fuel in a better way - petrol is a mixture or many chemicals and their chains -there are some fractions in petrol which wont evaporate even at 40 deg c,+ hotter the air lesser the fuel energy wasted in increasing the temp of the air fuel mixture. so more complete evaporation of the fuel + more thermal efficiency. it will slightly drop the ultimate power produced by the engine when it will be fully hot but then how many seconds u drive at full throttle @ red line that is @ 100%volumatric efficiency ?

and there is our trustworthy pal -- lambda rensor who will sense lesser air<infact lesser amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases >and will help ecu reduce fuel injection duration
