He's now exploring the option of buying and LX model and fixing a front wheel drive (first thing is this possible) He claims it is done in M&M jeeps so it must be possible to fix in Safari also.
if Yes what might be the aprox cost of this modification.

thanks in advance for all the inputs.
This is *theoretically* possible, but not practical. Safari uses a Electronic 4wd system, which will be very difficult to retrofit. The M&M jeeps use a manual 4WD, which is relatively simple.

If he's very particular about 4wd, then a better option is to go for a pre-owned EX/GX/VX

cheers

Hi Arvind, It is not possible to convert 2WD Safari to 4WD in a safe way in any place other than the Tata plant. Jeeps have a much more basic front suspension set up with leaf springs. That is why it can be easily converted.

You friend can consider a good used 4x4 Safari or consider a 4WD Scorpio which is about a lakh cheaper.

The angle of the wiper Arms need to be tweaked, ask them to do it, you can find that in the manual too.

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

I have just returned from a trip to Bangalore from Madras. I noticed that when you apply brakes from a triple digit speed, there is brake judder - but the car stops in a straight line and doesn't pull. The stopping distance is normal too. Last time when I took the car for service, they noticed that in a test ride and told me they need to open up the drums/discs to find out the problem.

What could be the issue ?

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

The steering gremlins are back. Camber is out again, I dunno, why, haven't driven out of city for quite some time. So no rough road driving.

As for steering, on certain surfaces, around 30-50kmph the steering starts shaking violently. Got balancing done also. No use at all.

No problem at high speeds. Its basically car moving straight, and steering going left right(lot of play).

I will try to get it checked under extended warranty as its making noises also. Center pin bush was changed recently(not under warranty), so I guess I will push for a steering box/column change. There is some serious defect which they are unable to catch.

Tanveer this can be sorted out by changing the Steering Rod Column and same was done on my King under Extended Warranty and now happy with the steering.

Thanks gowda. Its good to know. I have complained multiple times and all they do is either center pin greasing, or replacement(at cost). This time I will tell them to change the column. It shakes violently, like what happens at high speed in cars without wheels balanced.
I have gotten wheels balanced multiple times, and on the machine they show perfect balance.
Moreover, in my case it happens around 40kmph-50kmph where steering shakes violently. Every time I turn on rough roads, the steering gives loud noises. I had reported this at 70K service earlier, however all they did was greasing, and problem went away for a few days.

re: The Tata Safari 2.2L Technical / Problems Thread

Last week, in the thick of a traffic snarl, I had to back up a little bit,, and in the heat of an argument with another fellow on the road, I reversed a feet or so without looking back - My bad.. There was a Maruti Alto right behind me, and I hit him lightly so.
We both left it at that, but after I got home, I saw that the rear fog lamp glass (right side) is broken - the reflector inside, bulb etc are intact, just the red glass is broken.

Is it a part that is easily available, or will they ask me to change the whole thing? There aren't any screws also, wondering how that glass gets removed and fitted back? Yet to call KHT....

And yes - that is the first hit to the Safari and I felt very bad for 2 days..., feeling better now! :-)

Even I did the same thing once, and now the white elephant has broken rear fog lamp glass. You have to buy whole unit, but if you search the grey markets, you may find glass only.

The rear fog lamp unit is not very expensive IIRC. Had changed mine about 2 yrs back..should be less than Rs. 500/-

Re: Fitting Car Stereo on the Dash

I guess none have done such before, so have to look for Plan-B; to get a 3" monitor (mount like GPS) for the rear camera.

Thanks anyways.

Your expert advise

@Prowler, The brake juddering can be due to damaged discs. Even I faced the same problem and the culprits were damaged discs. Get it checked at TASS and if they are damaged get them changed under warranty.

Thanks HappyRoadie. I will have to take the car to Concorde in ECR. Only problem is in rectifying this issue, I am afraid of getting other unknown problems. This Concorde always seems full and they appear to do the job in a hurry.
