If need be, I would want to get it done proactively. Please advise. |
A mechanic recently told me when I asked him to change the timing belt of 3 L DICOR that this version has timing chain which does'nt needs replacement? Please clarify anyone?

Its reports like this that I love to read :)
Its good to change the timing belt and check the pulleys now that the truck has reached 1 lac kms. I remember this conversation with a TASS SA that they recommend a "check and replace" of the timing belt at around 50k kms. So even if it has not given you any trouble, its due for a replacement I guess. It costs around Rs. 1000/- |

Even I had asked my service advisor to check the timing belt and replace it when I had taken it for the 70k service this june but he promptly replied that sir this is a 3.0 dicor, the timing belt doesnt need replacement.
I was so happy that I dint bother to argue. Finally few things in the safari which last longer than you:D

Thanks for the update guys. I also called my SA and confirmed the same. Whew what a relief it is :)
The timing belt in 2.2 is rubber. Don't know why they changed from Chain to rubber. The timing belt changes costs around 7-8k with belt, water pump, idler and tensioner. All are changed in one go
Got a new Safari 1 month back. Noticed the following concerns:
- noise from tail gate.
- noise from window glasses when they are half way down.
- rattling noise from the middle row doors when driving a little fast on rough road.
- ignition switch light was not working (fixed by my fog lamp installer).
- glove case light was not working (was not even aware that a light like this exists in a safari until i read this thread).
- sudden loss of power (for a second) and lots of black smoke coming out that i can notice using the rear view mirror.
- broken vents in the middle row ac vent (the one that points at passenger knees)
- the "bolt" noise while turning the truck.
- missing bolt covers from the front doors (this is right below to the power window switches)
- the infamous krr sound
- front ash tray never locks easily
I gave it for its first service last week and everything seemed to be fixed when i took the test drive after servicing. BUT one week down the line and all noises have surfaced again.
The krr sound has almost gone away.
Another thing that i have noticed is that safari refuses to start if left unused for more than a day. When i turn the ignition key, i hear a click sound from the engine bay and that's it, no attempt to chug the engine either. After couple of tries, it starts properly.
Can someone help me with what all that i need to get checked when i visit TASS again?
Also, has anyone noticed that the area surrounding the hand break becomes warm during long drives? Looks like there is some place from where hot air is getting pushed inside the cabin.

True. M&M has persisted with timing chains. Perhaps timing belts were introduced from a noise reduction \ cost reduction perspective. New gen chain designs have reduced noise & are usual designed for the lifetime of the engine. Failures \ replacements are non-existent \ minimal.

guess you have laid your hands on a used safari. The starting issue suggests that you need to replace your starter motor. There are coils inside the starter which might have worn out.The slight click when you turn the ignition key indicates that the battery is trying to supply power to the starter motor but the starter motors in not able to rotate.
Two reasons for this
1. Battery down.
Which is not the issue in your case as the car starts after few tries.
2. Coils worn out.
So until the remaining coils take that extra load your car wont start.
I strongly doubt that you need to get the point 2 rectified.
For the handbrake issue, check the rubber beadings near the handbrake.

I would have thought of these things if it were an old car. This is a brand new one run only 1600kms.

:Shockked: a brand new one with all these problems.I agree that safari's have their own niggles but a new one with all the reported problems till date.
Just Wow.
So tata is still relying on the customers to do the QC for them.:Frustrati
Ok then totally ignore the starter issue which I mentioned. No way starter can go bad so early with 1600 on the odo.
Just one more question.Did you get any electrical work done on your safari from any third party vendor.I am asking as these kind of starting problems have been reported post autocop, window relays etc installation if not done by a skilled technician.Just a check in case it help.
I am totally at loss of words here after you mentioned its a brand new safari.

If the issue happened only after first service then I would suspect an unscrupulous mechanic at TASS would have swapped the good (new) motor starter in the new car with an old (probably faulty) motor starter for making some quick buck from another customer who befriended him for 500/-. Can't rule out this possibility in our country!!

I got hellas and parking sensors installed but there was no problem after the installation. It happened only after the first servicing.

EDIT: checked the engine bay, no signs of tampering anywhere that i can see from outside.
Crap! How do i check if this has been done? Let me walk to my safari and see if i can make some sense around this.

The starter in a safari cannot be seen from the top.For checking it you would have to get under the safari and it will be a cylindrical object in the engine bay pretty near to the front passenger seat.
Thought as bj mentioned that this cannot be ruled out but I doubt that this can happen at a authorized service station.
Simple test to ensure starter is working on fine is call any automobile mechanic who deals with electrical issues and ask him to check whether the starter motors is receiving current when you turn on the ignition.
Yesterday, I noticed a peculiar issue with my middle door power window (Right side , Behind the driver seat). My beast was parked outside the garrage the whole day and it also rained for couple of hours. While I was trying to park her inside the garrage, I opened the windows and then tried to close. But the right side middle door window did not close. I tried several times for almost 5 to 6 minutes. But to my surprise it got closed after several attempts and later I did not experiment again. Then I called up the TASS SA to check with him. He told that some times it happens due to water.
Please suggest if any body has faced the similar kind of issue. My beast is still under warranty (Jan 2011 model) and she is due for her 15k service with in a week.
Regards,
Shams
It is either a loose contact at the switch, or the beading is dirty, or something wrong with the winder mechanism ('window regulator' in TASS parlance). Don't be afraid to open the window, just don't do it all the way down so much that you can't pull up the glass by hand if the winder is kaput. After that, spray WD40 into the beading all the way around. Try closing the window after that.

I have had my head light bulbs swapped by some TASS. I found only when went to check why head light brightness is low ( I was using 90/100 Rally and someone swapped it with 55/60).
