Had a bad motoring day today, noticed that the windshield(i10) was cracked on the top corner above the passenger side. It is a fairly big crack, about 10-15 cms, as seen below.
Inquired with HMP, Chennai for claiming warranty(misplaced optimism) the service advisor had a look and rejected the warranty claim by saying it had a chip which would come from a stone or other object impacting the glass, but for me it looks so tiny that I have trouble believing, that a tiny chip(marked in the 2nd photo, taken in extreme macro mode) can cause such a big crack.
As about the cost involved, the new one is 7500, car is 6 months old, so would get 100% on the glass, but I have to pay for sealant and beading, so my outgo from the pocket would be approx 2000. My NCB is due only 6 months later, about 20%, which works around to 3000. So my cost if insurance is claimed is 5000(2000+3000).
My doubt is if I claim insurance for this job, would my insurance premium raise for the next year? I am inclined towards replacement, but having second opinion with 'Windshield Experts' tomorrow.
And of all days, the glass had to break on a Friday.:Frustrati
do let us know what windshield experts have to say. By the way, they do change the glass for Rs.1150 in Delhi, rest they claim from insurance, or that is what they told me.
PS : I am not sure about the 20% NCB figure too. I guess it should be around 10% only for the first year.

Which place is this, authorized garage or windshield experts? The service advisor did quote a 20% NCB, I do remember getting 20% NCB for my previous car. But I could be wrong, will check with the insurance company.
Thanks
Glass has 0% deductible. You would have to pay marginal costs toward the rubber beading etc. I say, go ahead with windshield experts. Fantastic service too.

Are you sure? I thought that all plastic and glass parts are assumed to be 50% depreciated for insurance claims irrespective of the age of the vehicle.

He is right. Glass is covered 100%
The car owner has to foot the bill for the glue/sealant and loose the NCB.
You must have carried over the NCB from your previous car.
Your premium will rise ( I think by 10%) next year. If your NCB is 20% then you face a 20+10=30% rise in the premium for next year. If your NCB is 10%, then of course total increase in premium will be 20%.
Just now spoke to windshield experts, they have the glass in stock, the price they are quoting is 4667(glass only), whereas the HMP was quoting 7500(glass only).
I am going there in the noon to get it fixed, also am making sure its OEM glass, is there anyway I can make sure of this, I am definitely going to look for the logo in the glass, but other than that is there anything else i can verify?

Windshield Experts only uses glass manufactured by AIS (Asahi India). I'm not sure if that is the OEM for Hyundai. Check your cars current windshield to see if it is of AIS. But even otherwise, from what I've heard, glasses fitted by windshied experts aare pretty accurate.
AIS is pretty reputed. They are used in Honda and I guess Maruti too.
How it break, i dont bieleve i have seen the reason for the same? Freak Accident?
Go ahead & claim insurance and also get it done at Windshield experts & not at HMP. W.E do a pretty good job. Do not look for any logo, you will not find that. Be assured that the glass they use is genuine. :)
Well it was exactly one week since the glass cracked. I think it cracked because of a stone flying off from a two wheeler hitting the glass. The recent rains have loosened a lot of gravel in almost all the roads.
Did the job in W.E near Ega theatre, the rate they charged was WAY below what HMP was quoting. HMP quoted, as I have said before 7500 for the glass alone, 1800 for the beading & glue. W.E charged 4667 for ALL. I did not claim insurace since the calc for NCB and a slight increase in insurance offset the balance.
The work done was professionally, quick and thorough, they are indeed 'Winsdshield Experts' for a good reason. The spec for the glass which I took a photo too(will put up later) is the same as OEM, all the DOT grades match as well as the transparency levels. One more positive offshoot of this incident is that I have none of the annoying stickers on my glass anymore (had to think of all the positive things about the incident when i signed the credit card charge). It surely helped that AIS is i10's OEM and W.E is a direct retailer of AIS.
Mods- Can you mention 'job done or windshield replaced' in the title, so that there is closure.
Thanks

You both must be travelling at a high speed for a small pebble to get your glass cracked like this. How come you didn't realise it as soon as it happened?
A brick had once fallen on my santro windshield from the third floor and i just had a 2 cm long crack without chipping at one corner. Not replaced since 2 years either. Just stuck at "DR" sticker from the inside and covered it.
Anyways, glad it's fixed and you got "closure"!:D

Its a minute impact point, the impact was near the edge of the glass, both the Hyundai service advisor and W.E guy told that, had the stone hit the glass anywhere in the middle, the glass would not have cracked, but if there is small impact near the edges of the glass it would crack. Its like the weakest point for the glass.
Just my luck I guess, as I have highlighted in the snap, its a small impact point, photo taken in super macro in the camera.
